Lots of people missed the opportunity to get a 444 30 years ago.  It is an often overlooked cartridge.  Especially good for people that like the big bore concept of the 45-70 but not the recoil of P+ loadings.

I doubt that there is any game in North america thaat would not be appropiately hunted with a 444.

So now for a limited time it is available again.

Do I 'need' one of these?

My Dad has had a 444 for 35yrs. Awesome deer getter. It is a bit heavy, but shoots very well. I think it would work in the 1895 guide gun platform, I have one in 450, short and light, factory ported.

When I decided to get into the large bore lever action game many years ago, as I had none, I started looking for a Marlin in either, 444, 45-70 or 450 Marlin.  I'd have taken the first to come along.  The 444 had several fans in my gun club at that point, but a 45-70 showed up first so that's where I went.  You won't be disappointed. 788

I think for deer, a better comparison, is to 44mag. 44mag is on light side for DRT deer, with an extra 30% omf, 444 marlin should shine. The trouble with 444marlin is bullet selection, you're stuck with bullets designed for 44mag. There are a few exceptions, 300gr XTP mag is one, it's a bit tougher. With nearly same velocity, as 45/70+p and 10% less frontal area, it'll probably have overpenetration on deer, unless bullet expands ala HP.

I'm not much on leverguns, but I'd consider it over 35rem or 45/70. Make a good truck gun, Dad carried 30/30 marlin, for years in MH, good enough for "varmints" and passed most state's and Canadian transport regs.
