When the water is very calm, its temperature can often drop several degrees below freezing 32 oF) without ice crystals forming on the surface. This is known as supercooled water: and when this occurs, some sort of turbulence suddenly agitates water (like a boat movement, bow wake) this supercooled water,  instantly crystallizes, with millions of crystals.  This layer of slushy ice called frazil.

A few days ago while hunting,  D's duck boat got covered in FRAZIL.

Just a few minutes of science.

Very interesting. I'm sure it creates quite a bit of drag, but does it cause any other problems for a boat?

When I've got it I'm usually deep in a swamp going up stream under oar power.  build up is quick.  seems the boat drags the stuff along; so think of a tarp tied onto the boat as you rowed.

Always laugh. About 65 years ago, my bro' and I rented a heavy old wooden row boat to fish a small pond, $2 all daay.

we fished, don't remember catching anything.  At the end of the day as he rowed back to the dock, we noticed the anchor had been in all day!!  good olde family joke.

I remember one day after waterskiing, brother was going to anchor for lunch, about half second after, he threw anchor over, he remembered ski rope had broke and we "stole" anchor rope. Anchor and chain ended up about 25' deep and it took lots of dives, to walk it shallow enough retrieve. After we got home Dad asked, why we didn't just tie rope onto it, instead of walking it in. After trying to swim it to top, neither of us thought to tie rope to it.

Our "anchor" for this thread must have broken loose.Wink...seems we have "drifted" off topic somewhat BUT A new story....once when at the cabin at lake we took pontoon out for a bit of fishing....found a spot to stop and try so I picked up the anchor With Rope attached....threw it out and rope broke when it was all out and the anchor just kept going & then kerplunk into the water....never did find it. Rope was nylon and sun had decayed it to point too weak to take that bit of a jerk so it broke. Embarrassed  Nice "Navy" type anchor too!Ouch

Over the years, I've had 4 good anchors that I bought lost.  but I didn't lose them, others did.

Gave bro' a nice anchor and 75' of 1/2" line.  went fishing with him and tried to explain how to use an anchor.

See he 'thinks' (like others) that if you are in 30' depth, then you put our enough line to hit bottom.  This will guarantee not holding and losing anchor.  He did the 3 times against my advise.

So as guaranteed the anchor dragged immediately and foul hooked a submerged tree.  one hour of him trying to get it off (steering around the snag, only half-hitching it more.  had to cut line...lost 40' and anchor ($100).  I didn't replace the gift. $%$#@&

I grew up using anchor with 3-10' of chain first, then anchor line, which was two to four times depth, depending on current and wind. Also learned to run second line, off anchor line, about two boat lengths long. That way you can leave line tied to bow, while dropping and retrieving anchor from stern. If using anchor and buoy, use separate bow line, short enough, if dropped it won't reach prop, to attach anchor line and stern line to. You can then just unsnap bow line, from buoy and leave anchor set, in case of snag coming down river or the need to chase fish. You can also use this second line, to move boat across current, avoiding much of the anchor swing.
