What is happening with all the outragiosly large scopes.  I don't mean power, jusy actual size.

A good 3-9x-40mm on a one inch tube, (aka Leupold VX-3) is VERY tough to beat.  Now I have 16x, 20x and 24x variable all on the 1" 40mm objective fraame.  None of these are lacking in image.

But now everytime I go to buy a scope, I need to get irons off, then go to high or extra high mounts.  Seems to me the standards have shifted....tactical???

thoughts.

Yeah it's a tacticool thing. Optics designed for rail mounts. Huge objectives = larger field of view which really helps those who are not old school trained to use our other eye open.
...oh yeah! thats gonna hurt!

30mm main tube is becoming the "normal" and you can get up to 34-42mm tubes. A 30mm tube with 50mm objective lens, in same power range, as 1" tube with 40mm obj, will let much more light in and with same quality lenses, have a wider field of view. This wider field of view, allows you to use higher magnification and still find your target.

Part of the demand for these scopes, is driven by increased focus, on long range and ultra long range sports. Some of these scope cost as much as a car and weigh as much as a small boy and aren't much use for shooting inside 300yds.
