Seems that deer hunting has changed over the 60 years that I've been hunting.

Back then learning territory and deer habits was what was done.  then hunting  was just fun and no one expected a kill each time out, or even every year.

Today, for a variety of reasons, deer hunting is hunting over bait.  Kills expected daily, and little hnting skills involved.  Even the positioning of the bait piles is usually done by someone else.

I don't know about hunting over bait, I've never lived nor hunted, where it was done. I do know some areas, covers so thick, they use feeders to concentrate deer.

I guess you could argue, hunting over feeding areas, is same as over bait, just more spread out. I usually, sit over a clear cut, burn, or hay field, to start day and then go to spot and stalk.   Depending on area, I may do an evening sit over feed or water.

The first 15-20 yrs hunting was either drives/pushes or sitting on migration routes. We often as not got our deer, by end of season, but it certainly wasn't daily.

DEER HUNTING has indeed changed alot in the last 60yrs & maybe not always for the better. I agree that baiting is NOT the way to HUNT deer but it is a good way to kill deer.
Bear is right too in that there is no skill involved with sitting over a bait pile waiting for a "trained" deer to come eat. Baiting also pushes deer to be more nocturnal.
My early deer hunting mimicked RobtMT's with the deer drives or sitting on "runways" as we called the deer trails back then. Walking/stalking was also in the mix then and now.
Here it is legal to bait but there are some rules from the DNR. Corn or apples are primary baits around here. The limit is 2 gallons of bait MAX on a bait site and only ONE bait site per 40 acres. Where we have evidence of CWD the baiting is banned in that county and neighboring counties. Also, no mechanical bait/feeding devices are allowed in state.
Cameras are now a mainstay for many deer hunters to find, monitor and track the deer until hunting season.

I really hope I get a deer every year, but that's not the main reason I hunt.

I have a few guys that I hunt with that I don't see very often and look forward to seeing them and all the fun at camp, and out in the field. That's what I look forward to every year.

Unless I'm hunting Elk. Then getting an elk is the most important part. But then, I usually hunt solo for Elk.

I hunt solo a lot. For me it's getting out in the field and seeing all the wildlife and all the other things that I see when I'm out.
