car is packed. got dentist appointment to 're-do a broken tooth at 2 pm. I'm leaving from his office.
Will be hunting southern tier NY and swaping back and forth to PA for bear. (gone 6 days) Rifle decision! Taking the 260 kimber for deer, will be taking head and neck shots only. and taking the 8mm CZ Stomper double barrel for bear. have 150 yards of rope for SUV assisted drag. also have deer cart if level enough. Last resort, I'm taking my Freighter back pack and will butucher in woods and pack out. But first must shoot something. Will take my Stryker stove and eat a hot noon meal. Been having just enough snow mixed with rain to make life interesting.

GOSH those words send chills up and down my spine. You need 5000 feet of mule tape. Your a tougher man then I. I know your 260 is plenty for your little deer, but a 8mm DBL NICE. I want one . I have no idea about it but I would try it with beer...

Good Luck Bear.
I have been hunting solo for Elk. I figure I can cut it into smaller pieces if I find one in a bad place. Good choices on rifles. I would like to see your double rifle some time. Wing master

Any luck up in the tier Bear?
Needed my orange coat to be not only water proof but perhaps a floatation device yesterday. Sadly they were neither. Absolute frog strangler all day.....except for the few times it would spit pea gravel sized ice and huge globs of wet snow. Clouds were in and out at elevation so visibility would go from 25 yards to 1000 at a whim. No big fuzzies were to be found, yet the day was not a loss as I walked into four bucks camping in the brush together. I started off the top bench on Schaffers head in clouds, took about 10 steps and the deluge instantly stopped and the clouds rose for about 10 minutes. I stopped immediately and directly in front of me was a dinky four pointer shaking the water off in a blur, maybe 25 yards and oblivious. Past him and to the left at about 65 yards was an 8 point and to his right a six. All were not worthy of a shot when starving, but out past them I noticed the tall grass and briars moving a bit and the wind was dead calm, I watched for a couple minutes when the big white tines poked up over the brose. Absolute beauty of a 10 point! 130-135 class, big bodied........and a week before season of course. Got some video on my phone before the water finally worked its way into the works and it died. Then just as quick as it all had cleared, the clouds sank back in and the skies dumped like it fixed it's temporary clog. I backed up the trail as quiet as I could and left them not knowing I was ever there. Other then jumping a grouse then, the day was a toss. Hindsight.......still worth the trip out and to feel alive. |

"....still worth the trip out and to feel alive." says it all.
very windy, cold with rain all day. Had a deer walk by at 6:50am...24 minutes before opening hour. Someone shot it at 6:55...illegal! Heavy wet snow all this morning, I'm back at camp (warm). Will hit deer NY again tomorrow. Tuesday I might drop 20 miles south to hunt PA bear season.

Well yesterday was fruitless again on the big fuzzies, but the deer were plentiful and the racks worthy of a look. Had a nice 8 walk up too about 20-25 yards from me and had I not kneecapped my rifle and let it drop into the snow, he would have passed me by less then 3 feet! I had only stopped my hike and leaned it against the little tree so I could dig into my pack and grab a bottle of water. I had no intention of standing there for long or trying to get pictures, but things do happen. Wind was steady at 30-35 mph on the face and the back side was as calm as you could hope for, sunny and a nice fresh inch of fluffy goodness to track on. Glorious day to be out and about. 8.2 miles of hoofing it across the north face of Schaffer and not a single bear track was cut.....*insert Yosemite Sam grumble*.......still way better then a good day at work. About 5 miles NW of me was a shooting gallery, perhaps today will be mine? Girls are on the bus and my late start is about to be under way.
Good on you Bear for keeping it legal. So few like to play by the rules anymore. May the big girl in the sky bless you with a nice rack at close to vehicle range, and good weather. |

.....well, it was a quick day. Girls have a half day so my hunting is a bit abbreviated. Still had time for the half loop around the hill. Yesterdays dusting had a nice series of fresh tracks to follow, none were big fuzzies. Plenty of fresh deer, squirrel and.....YOTES!!!!!!!.....concentrate J, just concentrate. Jumped the same white-tipped buck from yesterday. He snorted and leaped onto the logging road I was walking at about 30 yards and took one leap and stopped, looked back at me, sniffed the air with his muzzle at the sky and gave a disgusted whiff at me.....then casually sauntered off up another path like I some how was that disdainful towards his sunning......as if! Anywho, I proceeded down the path for a few hundred yards when a quick motion below and to my left caught my eye, probably a deer, but the choppings and briar make it a guess. I figured the angle it moved and guessed it would cross below me on the path at about a hundred yards, and sure enough a doe squirted across and into the thickness beyond....followed by another 8 point! Nose down and tounge waggin, he was on her and the world could end around him and he wouldn't have noticed. A few moments later the doe hopped back out on my path at about 60 yards and proceeded directly at me, sure enough, the little head was thinking way ahead of the big one and he followed her right up the path as well. Mature he is with a bit more mass but the rack was the typical brush style and tarnished color vs the bright white of the previous buck. Tines were short but the rack went maybe 16-17 inches across before tapering in to about 8-9 at the tips. G-2's were only 4 1/2- 5 inches, but still a nice sized deer and I have enough toothpicks.. They trotted along to within 25-30 yards before she sensed him gaining and jumped back into the thick up the hill to my right before cutting back almost beside me again and then disappearing into the briars above in the same direction as the other 8 had trotted off in. I waited a bit, hoping to here some rattling of the sabers, but I guess you can't have everything in one day. The warm breeze melting away the evidence of others travels and the growling in my belly meant it was time to make it back to the house for the girlies. Tomorrow is another day, lord willing and perhaps a big fuzzy will meander by my way.....note to self, sunny days, apply sunscreen!

It sounds like you're having a great time JSG.
I'm kinda thinking either you need to shoot one of them deer or turn it into a coyote hunt. If you concentrate on deer a bear should show up. Wing master

Well the deer will be hiding tight on monday morning.
Yesterday was great. But being a week day, I was the only one on 5,000 acreas of public land. Warm night and sunny dat, but those 4-6 inches of snow held up. great visibility. nothing, but a beautiful days hunt. Back home today, 200 miles; three whtetails in my yard eating my shrubs! today, unpack, reorganize for northern tier hunt with son drive up on sunday. hunt there monday-tues with 'the kid'. Then hunt 50 miles north of home thursday/friday. And old man can't hunt much more than 2 days in a row here in the mountainous/forested east.

Bear, where are you hunting in NY? Not looking for spots, I don't go to the south, just wondering how far from me you are going. I am assuming you are just across the border in NY. Lots more deer down there, but a lot more guys chasing them
