These lights came back on just in time. Smile

              ............................

Has it been fixed?

I bought a new Remington 700 for my grandson last Christmas.

A few days ago I was told that there may be defects with the trigger causing unwanted discharge . I've checked out the story and it seems that in 2013 a settlement was reached and the triggers in question were or are going to be replaced.

My question is:  Are the triggers in the more recently manufactured Remington 700s free of the unwanted discharge problem?

I have no qualms replacing the present trigger with a reliable  brand if there is  consensus one is needed.

The problem was in older  700s where dirt and oil collected and stopped the disconnect from moving properly.   The problem was when cycling the action to eject unfired cases.

They will replace any alleged defective trigger.  check their web site for recall.  https://www.remington.com/support/safety-center/remington-model-700-and-model-seven-notice

Generally,  Remington Arms Company, LLC (“Remington”) is voluntarily recalling Remington Model 700™ and Model Seven™ rifles which were manufactured from May 1, 2006 through April 9, 2014 and which have an X-Mark Pro® (“XMP®”) trigger. Rifles manufactured after April 9, 2014 are not subject to recall.

Older models with the original triggers were subject to a class action suit; which had a settlement. http://remingtonfirearmsclassactionsettlement.com/

I have 8 model 700s; no problems.

I would check to make sure it's not one of recalled new models, they have list of serial number range. I also have some of the older ones, never had problems nor upgraded them.

Just because you bought it recently, some retailers have old new stock of bolts, that could be from 14. I recently picked up a couple old new stock savages, from cabelas, than had 8/2010 and 9/2012 mfg dates. I guess they're cleaning out corners of warehouse, in case basspro merger ever goes through.

Thanks for the information.

I'll use the serial # to check the manufacturing date in addition to checking     what the Remington web site says.

You know...I did go online looking but just got tied up with information constipation.

This is how to tell, if it's been "fixed" or was made after recall.

VERIFICATION OF CORRECTIVE ACTION: Upon return of your rifle, you will note a punch mark on the bolt release (see Photo 3 below). This mark confirms your rifle has been inspected and specialty cleaned under this recall program.
Remington has also corrected the XMP trigger assembly process to eliminate this problem in rifles made after April 9, 2014. Rifles made after April 9, 2014 will also have a punch mark on the bolt release.

RobertMT,

Thanks. I've been to the page that has that information.

This rifle has the ribbed trigger which is another indicator but I'm still going to check date of manufacture.

If you e-mail rem with the serial # and model.  They will tell you of any recall.

I sent the serial # to Remington and it is not on any recall list.

I talked with my son and he told me that the boy has used the rifle in several shooting  opportunities at different ranges recently and has had no problems with it.

I feel better now.

Thanks for the help.

Remington triggers are safe if used properly. That being said it is a mechanical devise and ALL mechanical devises can and will fail. Part of the ownership and use of any gun or other device is the safe and proper user of them. If used correctly, even a failure should not cause any injury. In the case of the boy who was killed it does not matter if the rifle failed or not, the gun was being unload in a non-safe manner and that was the primary cause of the death. If the gun was being handled in a save manner we would not be talking about it now.

After this happened I talked to my gun smith about it and he said he has dealt with thousands of Remington 700 and had never had one fail the way this did. He also told me that he has had dozens of people come in with their 700's saying it accidentally fired on them. He took the guns and made sure they were unloaded and then had the customer show them what happened. In every single instance where the gun misfired (again empty gun) the customers finger was on the trigger when they took it off save. Also every customer who did this did NOT realize their finger was on the trigger. Some customers called him a lier so he even went so far as to film the customers when they did this to show them. Most customers where in total shock at seeing their finger on the trigger.

As long as you teach your son the proper way to handle and respect the gun I don't see you having any issues.

MtElkHunter,

I agree 100% about the the importance of safe gun handeling.

It was my sister who brought this to my attention after the recent 60 minute's clip on it. My immediate reply was that there are no loaded rifles in our families homes and with other proper safe handling this shouldn't happen to any one of us. But not knowing all the particulars I looked for advise from those whom I thought did. That worked well.

Another view on walker triggers, I don't agree with some of his conclusions, but it's worth the read.
