Anyone used one of the Cricket 22 LR rifles?
seems pretty decent for a youngster. |

I bought one for the grand kids. It worked well. It was small enough for a kid to put to their shoulder and use without any issues and it was light enough also. The only issue was they grew out of it pretty quick, within 2 years they had outgrown it and moved on to bigger rifles and then it sat waiting for the next kid.

YUP!
Got one for my big Granddaughter, she is 18 and in the air force now. It sucked. Sure it is small and light. But very difficult for a 6 year old to manipulate. Single shot , the safety needs a BIG hand with a GOOD grip and did not shoot worth a crap. You all know my Little granddaughter uses my 10/22 with a bi-pod on it to help hold it up. The safety is easy so she uses it faithfully. I only let her put in 3 shells in the clip normally. When we are shooting cans and junk I let her load the entire clip. AND it shoots lights out. |

As you may remember, for my oldest grandson, I got him T/C hot shot, they've since been discontinued. I'm replacing it with left hand bolt, since he decided he needed to shoot from wrong side. While looking I came across CZ 452 LH.
You may want to check out CZ455 scout, one that he can certainly use for a few years. CZ455 scout I've seen many of the cricket, chipmonk, rascal type 22s, waste of money, might as well start with quality 22. |

I went out and bought one when I first heard my wife was expecting.
Just wanted to say my kid got her first gun at three months in the womb. The way to look at these "micro" starting rifles is that they are just for initial training on how to fire a rifle. It is nearly impossible to load from the prone position. The muzzle needs to be held vertically down to help gravity feed a new cartridge. The chamber area is so small that .22 shorts are the much easier to load. Really it is something that you load, position the kid in front of a target. Hand them the gun make sure they have proper form and target acquisition then cock it for them. Another thing is unless you smarty yank the tiny bolt back the empty case will not eject free of the gun. You have to tilt it on it's side to let it roll out. All of this technique is too much for a young beginner. I don't ever recall having them shoot more than 20 rounds or so before getting bored and wanting to do something else. I took it out this morning and ran 4 shorts through it. 4 hits on my gong, kinda fun but it was enough. Back in the safe it went. I think the Savage Rascal is a better gun, it really doesn't matter, though it may be the kid's first gun it will not be the cherished heirloom you think it will be. Like was said by others that will be a 10/22 or CZ or in my case lever actions. DD Edited by deaddog |

I think a quality pellet or BB gun is a better first step, for a little kid. The reality is you have to get past Mom first and kid's often don't have attention span, that we did.
I ended up getting him this 5 meter comp BB gun after trying red ryder, too hard of trigger, too hard to cock and very inaccurate. Besides being easy for him to shoot, in garage or backyard, it's accurate enough to be fun, for older kids. It's the one 4H uses for their 5 meter bb gun competition (8yrs+) |

Robert, do you get any bounce back from the tires with your BB gun?

Yes you can get bounce back from steel BBs, from tires and even heavy cardboard boxes, if you're closer than 10yds or so. I set box, to line up empty cans on, in front of target stand, to right of tires. I clothespin balloons, crackers, and tortilla chips to hoops. It's upright is angled back and hoops are thin enough, bounce back isn't much of problem, safety glasses and ears are always worn, even with BB gun's. Lead pellets with tires and steel 22rf targets, don't seen to bounce back. I use wad cutter style pellets to be sure.
I've not had 22rf bounce back, but I tend to stay back a bit more, to be safer. You do get some splatter back from CF pistols, tires less so than 1/2" AR500 steel. Even powder puff 38sp loads stick in rubber. |

I got my nieces a CZ452 22LR Scout back when CZ decided to discontinue the 452. They haven't yet shown any interest in shooting, yet. but the oldest just turned 6, so maybe soon.

SIL took him out, last night, in ground blind for eve hunt, saw a couple does, out of bow range, but he had good time. I've told him, when he gets a bit better with 22, I'll take him out for squirrel or gopher. He's coming over wed, with SIL, while I'm at work, to practice some more.
He was asking, when can he shoot my big pistol. I'm pretty sure he means 22rf, he'll have to convince Mom first. Edited by RobertMT - 03 September 2017 at 22:53 |

Grandson really liked shooting 22shorts, I also shot some in 22 revolver, besides being quiet, they have pretty good accuracy, cost was normally issue. I found deal on them at cabelas CCI 22short CB $9.99 per 100, almost same as going price for 22lr now. http://www.cabelas.com/product/shooting/ammunition/rimfire-ammunition%7C/pc/104792580/c/104691780/sc/104536080/cci-rimfire-ammunition/705571.uts?slotId=2 I ordered couple bricks of them, free shipping on $99 order. Thought I'd pass on, in case you wanted order some too. |

Thanks Robert. The shorts are nice.
last time out with Grand son we shot some in his cricket. Cost is a problem as shooting goes slow in a single shot with a 6 year old. I figure he will burn thru 22 fast once we get to the 10-22. My son and family will be moving overseas this year, so Grandson range time will be minimal. thanks for the Cabelas heads up. might just get some for me.
