900f's thread got me to thinking about using different
bullets in the same gun for different purposes.

I have always found the most accurate load for my rifle
that I could find and stuck with it for anything I shoot
with that rifle.

I shoot prairie dogs with a 100 grain .243 and have shot
mule deer with the same gun and load.

What do you do? I just really hate to shoot loads that
aren't as accurate as something else would be.

Wing;

I agree. I have a load worked up for each gun. If
the purpose changes outside what I consider to be the
bounds of that cartridge & load, I change the gun.

Even though I have rifles that cover the full spectrum, from .20 to .338, except 6.5 currently, I tend to shoot different weights, for different purposes.

Take .223 for instance, I'll go as light as 36gr, for the red mist effect on closer shots and as heavy as 77gr for 600yds. Often this is for same rifle, but may have one sitting there cooling from shooting the light fast ones, while I'm reaching out with heavier ones.

Sometimes it's also a matter of different shooter, I'll load some 55gr in 243 @ 3,000fps, for targets, for new shooter or kids. Then I'll bump it up to 75gr, for bit more recoil and to stretch it out a bit, before going to 100gr hunting load. This allows them to get comfortable with same rifle and they seem to gain confidence quicker.

As far as changing for game hunted, I tend to change rifle for expected game and conditions or just to exercise one that hasn't been out for a bit.

There's not a lot of practical difference, between 308, 270, 280, and /06, inside of normal hunting ranges. Same as at extended range, 257wby, 270wsm and 300wm all shoot within inches of each other, some hold in wind a bit better and carry different energy. Some like 338wm, just carry more energy, while shooting as flat as a lighter one IE: 7mag.

I do that!
BUT I have to re - sight in the rifle to the different bullet.
Our 243
Deer I use a 85gr Speer
Pd's I use a 70 gr Sierra

22/250
A 52 gr Berger for coyotes and Pd's
A 60 gr Nosler Partition For wolf.

6mm rem
A 55 gr Nosler Ballistic tip for dogs and P dogs.
a 80 gr tts Barnes for deer and wolf.

Each have been tested for accuracy in each rifle, and tuned , all well under an inch at 100...

Some there is a large difference of the POI so you just cant feed in a different load an expect to hit the same, just will not happen.

First new non-mil rifle was a 243 win Sako. I used it for
everything, so I loaded and experimented with 60-105 gr
bullets. 2 years later I added a 308 rem 700. I loaded
100 to 220 gr in that, settled on 130 grs.

Now I just get a rifle based upon the bullet weight and
velocity I want, then develope a load for that and stay
with it, unless it proves poor on killing performance.

Packing for a Florida hunting/fishing trip taking the 6.5-
08 with the 123 gr Hornady that I used on antelope, it
shoots good and boar are easy to put down.
