Bust on them all you like. Other then the trigger, I have no hate for that little savage. Shoots better then most factory rifles and half the price. Boy used it effectively at extreme ranges, 600-800 yd. gongs. I still have a sweet spot on the old win 52's, but they aren't designed for walking with.
...oh yeah! thats gonna hurt!

I prefer the 10-22. Mine isn't that accurate, but I can
see where it is hitting and "walk it in" from there.

Fella's;

Many ranchers don't want a centerfire used & will
specifically ask what you plan to shoot the gophers with.
Some of 'em aren't any too happy about having a .17HMR
too close to their house either. It's a noise issue as
well as the lethal range of most centerfires.

D4570 did use a .17HMR Savage one year I think, but then
it got stolen out of one of the family's vehicles. I
seem to recall that the thief got caught & was put in the
state insane asylum, but haven't seen D show up with
another Savage or a .17. I understand that his coyote
huntin' partner uses a .17 Hornet I think & is pretty
deadly with it too. But you just can't beat the
cost/performance ratio of the .22lr when all is said &
done. Just t'other day I picked up another thousand
.22lr rounds for $100.00, or ten cents a shot. What's a
thousand rounds of .17HMR gonna run? Over twice that I
think.

Been thinking about picking up a good bolt 22 WMR rifle. I know there are strong opinions about the 22WMR vs 17HMR rounds, but I already have/shoot some WMR handgun, so thought I might stay with that in a rifle. Anybody been using that on gopher critters?

Cascade;

Since you're asking for opinions, I'll put mine forth.
There is no specifically manufactured "target" ammo for
either the .22 magnum or .17HMR. All anecdotal reports
I've come across seem to indicate that the .17HMR is
running a good distance ahead of the .22 magnum for
accuracy - as long as the wind isn't blowing. Those
little lightweight bullets do get shoved around by Mr.
Breeze.

I'm very happy, and generally considered to be fairly
effective, with my .22 long rifle gun. That's a CZ452
American with good glass and the ammo testing done to
determine what the gun likes to shoot. In my case that's
Winchester's 40 grain HP at an advertised 1280 fps. The
catalog designation is: X22LRPP. They are commonly
called PowerPoints. Over my Oehler chrono they very
consistently run 1250 fps out of my gun. Gopher kills at
100 yards are no problem.

You may wish to look at getting either a CZ452 or a 455
bolt gun. The 452's are almost all gone, right hand gun
production ceased a few years ago. All left handed
rimfire production remains the 452. The 452 has a
screwed in barrel to the receiver. The 455 is a slip-fit
switch barrel configuration. The 455 action is common,
so you can buy extra barrels & have .22lr, .22 magnum,
and .17HMR all in one gun.

Appreciate the comments on the WMR vs HMR. The CZ is an interesting candidate. The ability to use it for 22LR, WMR, and 17HMR is pretty cool. Thx.

I'm happy with my CZ 452. But CB if you could pick one
model either 452 or 455 in a lefty, which one would you
pick?

For gopher not sure if my 10-22 or CZ will go! Both
would be good gopher medicine.

BEAR;

That's not a fair question when somebody else's choice is
involved. There are several reasons why it's not fair,
and not the least is that I, of course, have no personal
experience with a 455. All reports on RFC seem to
indicate that accuracy between the two series still
depends on the individual gun rather than which series
the gun is in. There may be a very slight edge in the
452's favor, but if so, it's a minimal one.

A purely personal factor with me is that I'd rather have
a dedicated gun to the purpose than go through the hassle
of a re-zero sight in every time I switched a barrel out.
I found that out with .22 caliber conversion kits for
1911 pattern .45's. I now have my SIG 1911-22 and keep
my .45ACP as a centerfire. Some people enjoy the swap
process and the re-zero, I don't.

The 455 does offer more options currently available from
CZ. You can get heavy-barreled varmints, short-barrel
suppressor ready, European hogback stocks, etc., etc..
The switch ability also allows the owner to quite
literally create his own gun if CZ doesn't offer exactly
what he wants. In other words, I've seen a 455 fullstock
with an American barrel on it, and the consequent couple
of inches of red-neck-barrel-booger hangin' out the front
of the nose cap. To each their own. When I asked the
owner, he said he wanted no iron sights on the fullstock
which allowed him to mount the scope he wanted the way he
wanted. So I then asked why he didn't have the barrel
cut and crowned. He replied that then the barrel
wouldn't be right for any other gun he wanted to switch
it to. Go figure.

went to the range, had to sight in the 452 FS and took
it's big brother the 550FS. a lifetime favorite to me
(thanks CB).

Got my son a 455.

I'm not a switch barrel guy, I just buy another rifle
and scope. Hate reciting etc.

Well, I've got lots of time to let you guys kick this around so I can make a more informed decision later.

Actually, for the distances I'm generally getting on the gophers, I've actually been able to use the M&P15-22 with iron sights on a few. Also have a little old bolt with a scope and it works pretty well. I know this will evoke great howls and cries of "Blasphemy!" but I'm not really a big fan of the 10-22. I've had numerous failures to cycle since mine was new. Sent it back to Ruger and of course, they said everything is fine.

So, I'm just looking toward the time when I need to be shooting them at greater distances than 30 or 40 yards. I know the HMR and WMR are equally lethal when applied to a gopher. While there's a lot good to say about the 17, I have read that the WMR may be a little more stable in windy conditions.

Savage makes a pretty interesting line of rimfires that would be good candidates as well in either caliber, in case anybody has any comments on those.

Cascade;

My gopher gun is sighted in at 100 yards. If the range
is shorter I can aim at the feet, that way the mid-range
rise either gives 'em a new navel, a heart attack, or
cleans out the sinus infection. But, I do use fairly hot
.22 ammo that's very accurate in my gun. Oh, and I also
have a mil-dot scope on the gun. In prime gopher fields,
there's no time to fuss with figurin' out anything or
turning turrets, it's all shoot & shoot again. Under
those conditions mil-dot is a Godsend.

As you may recall, I'm fond of mil scopes myself. What scope are you using? Is it variable or fixed power?

It's a now-out-of-production Nikon Monarch 3.3-10X A/O mil-
dot. I seem to do just fine with ten power as the top end.

Do you ever use the lower power functions when you're gopher-izing? That is, how about a fixed power scope? Just thinking lightness and cheapness.

Most, but certainly not all, of the time it's on 6X. I do
use the 10X. If I absolutely had to replace it, I'd
probably go with something in the 4-12X to 4.5-14X range.
The tough part would be getting the scope with a mil-dot
reticle though.
