Seems like Colt has been sort of the "gold standard" for ARs in the past. Recently got my hands on an S&W M&P10 (AR in 7.62) and it shoots phenomenally well. Then got hold of an M&P 15 today (AR in 5.56). Loving it. Not sure what's different about the M&P vs the Colts, but I really am liking them, and they're more "affordable" than many of the others ... FWIW.

Mil Spec.

It goes back to pre ban, ban, and post ban. Colt messed around with
specs on each of these iterations. Other companies answer was the
"For military or law enforcement only" stamp. Colt like other companies
has gone through cycles of good and poor quality.

The saying for many years with S&W was never buy a S&W without a
cylinder.

The M&P 10 is a completely stand alone new rifle that is not mil spec
except for a few parts. It is very innovative surpasses the original
Armalite in many ways.

I've built around 30 AR's from $400 to $8000. It takes the right
combination of parts to make them run not necessarily the most
expensive. M&P 15's are a decent quality and value for the money.
M&P 10's are some of the best in their class.

Thanks for the affirmation, "Dog." I found both of these things to be remarkably well balanced and comfortable to shoot. Found the M$P 15 for $619, including shipping (going to the FFL, of course -- would somebody please explain what this so-called "Internet Loophole" and "Gun show loophole" are supposed to be that HRC is so frantic to save us from -- oh, but I digress).

Nonetheless, found both of these things to be a great value for an off-the-shelf offering.

M&P took "Gun of the Year" a couple years back and shoots quite well. Best bang for the buck off the shelf. The AR-10 platforms are shooters. I have a BB DPMS LAR. Smooth as silk and well balanced. Sub MOA with just about everything.
...oh yeah! thats gonna hurt!

Yep, that's what I'm finding too.

Now, when it comes to just plain fun to shoot, try that little M&P 15-22 (Smith's AR-looking 22 rifle). There are several of these on the market by different makers, but the controls on the S&W are all where they belong like a real AR. Shoot all day and improve your AR shooting skills for the price of 22s, One of my absolute favorites.

Oh, and it's pure hell on gophers.

Cascade;

Uh, we know that. There's this member of the site who
has been known to attend MYGAWDS armed with his M&P 15-
22, and 30 or 40 6-foot-long magazines. Burns through
his ammo in the first morning, whines, bribes, and
cajoles others into going back to the vehicles & toting
their spare ammo over for him to use, and on, and on.

OK, OK, I exaggerate - slightly. But yes, we are
familiar with the gun and it's use pattern.

Go Tribe!

Just under 40,000 rounds on 4 original 25 rd magazines. The springs
are getting tired on two of them. While they are much bulkier than 10/22
mags, they don't get gummed up with lube.

My custom 10/22 was more accurate by quite a bit but also more ammo
picky.

Endeavor to persevere.

I've had feed problems with the 10-22 a lot. It may (or may not) be any more accurate than the M&P 15-22, but the latter has never failed to feed or fire.

Tried everything I could to get the 15/22 to run with a Slidefire stock but
it wouldn't cooperate. 4-6 round bursts at best. Installed a $200 Timney
trigger, polished the buffer tube, got the special muzzle device, etc.
Just not enough recoil to make it run. It works just fine with it on a 5.56
AR.

Had dreams of triple my normal ammo consumption MYGAWDS, to no
avail.

CascadeFlyer

What magazines are you using with your 10-22?

I have an Eagle 30 rounder that I have had feeding
problems with.

Butler creek Hot Lips and Ruger mags have never given a
problem.

Just using the stock Ruger 10-rd "circular" mag.

I am thinking the 10 round factory magazines should be
the most reliable and the best fit.

I bet your feeding problem could be fixed.

When it was new, I was getting failures very frequently, like usually couldn't get through 10 rounds. Sent it back to Ruger. They said there wasn't any problem. Really??? It still malfunctions with regularity. Rarely shoot it as a result. Haven't bought another Ruger since.
