Well, I choked.
It was about 8:00 am and I had been hiking since a little after sunup. It was slow hiking because I was watching for deer and it was up the side of a pretty steep mountain. I sat down on a fallen tree to eat breakfast. I sat my bow down and sat real still looking through the timber for about 5 minutes before I was going to do anything. Off in the distance in the dirrection I was looking I heard a blowing whistling sound. I froze and kept looking. I slowly picked up my bow and clipped the release on the string while watching. A few seconds later I saw movement through the timber. Their were two bucks coming right twards me. One was a small spike or maybe a 2 point and the other one was a decent 3 point. They were making that blowing whistling sound and stomping their hooves. My heart was beating a hundred miles a minute. The 3 point stepped behind a pretty big tree and that gave me a chance to draw my bow back. when he stepped out from behind the tree he was standing broadside looking at me. In all this excitement I never even thought about the rangefinder I had in my pocket. I am at full draw with a deer in my sights and it dawned on me that I had no idea how far away this deer was. I didn't have much time to think, so I thought he was about 40 yards away. I lined up the 40 yard pin and let an arrow fly. The arrow went about 3 inches over his back. I watched both of them trot away. I went out and found my arrow and went back to my log and got out my range finder. Their was another downed tree just past where he was standing. About 5 to 7 yards. I ranged the log and it was 37 yards. That means the deer was about 30 yards when I shot. Damm, I choked. I ate breakfast and kept on hiking until it got too hot. I gave up at about 3:00 in the afternoon and the thermometer in my pickup read 83 degrees. Overall, It was a great day and I saw a whole bunch of deer and turkeys. Some were really shootable bucks. Looking east from Warren Peak. Probably half of that is in South Dakota. This is tipical of the pine and oak trees and brush of the low country. I saw lots, I mean lots of does. and more bucks than I have seen in this area in several years. This is up on top of the mountain I was hiking around on. I'm not sure how many feet of elevation I climbed, but it felt like a lot. Wing master Edited by Wing master |

Something about bow hunting and adrenaline, just when you don't need
the stuff. Pricking a deer from the ground is not an easy task. It's difficult enough from an elevated stand. Rarely do bow hunters undershoot. Looks like a good time. DD |

Thanks guys.
It was a great time. I have never tried hunting from a stand. I'm not sure I have the patients for it. I still haven't killed anything with a bow but I will keep on trying. Even if I never get anything, Bow hunting gives me one month longer to hunt. Wing master |

I prefer a well camouflaged ground blind. I can sit
comfortable on the ground for 10 hours straight. But the secret of ground blinds is PLACEMENT. Getting 15 yards down wind from a deer trail. I've killed over 2 dozen whitetails from a ground blind. I find scouting before the season necessary; and I usually set up two locations should the wind change. |
