Got to take a tour today of the Sierra plant in Sedalia, MO. I was like a
kid in a candy store. Highly recommend it if you get a chance. They
have a 300 meter under ground range. Very impressive. Rows and
rows of test weapons. They always shoot 10 round groups. One thing I
learned is they shoot them as fast as they can. This is so the barrel
doesn't have time to heat up. They mostly used 700 Rem actions and
the barrels were the same diameter as the action must be about 1 1/2"
diameter? They also get about 30 reloads per piece of brass. Starline
brass is right next door to Sierra. I didn't have time to take that tour but I
did get some brass.

welcome back stranger.

firing fast is unusual. the outside of the barrel may not get hot immediately. But the rifling is actually MUCH hotter when fired fast.

It takes time for the heat to migrate to the exterior barrel surface. They need some more engineers/scientists at Sierra.
