1/4 mile Out standing
My boy and I went calling coyotes Saturday. We had been watching the wind report all week , it looked doable but maybe a bit iffy . Well it was a matter of not enough wind not to much. it would swirl in all directions . We where right under the dividing line go a mile north and it was some kind of North ish breeze go a mile or so south and it was south ish.
First set we where in full darkness and tried some spotlighting no takers no trash talkers...
On to the next Man we where surrounded by dogs , barking and yipping every where. I think there was so many right where we where the ran each other off no one of them wanting to take them all on, long story short, Fun to listen to but no dogs.

A few more with Lots of back and forth we had 3 come in. I was just starting to fire when the 17 ,100 yards to my right went off. The dog standing side ways to me in my scope was now a running shot, witch I did not connect on. I see a coyote stumbling down the hill coming my way . It was the one son shot. Every time I fired at it, it fell just as I shot missed twice but he got a shot and it was down for good. Coming out we saw a coyote off to the left just looking around. I knelt down and the 22/250 had some blood too.

He can put the fur in the box quite fast.

We did serial more sets with just a lot of back talk but no one wanted to come in and dance.
On the way out we saw a road dog and it was in a spot we could park and on a peace of state ground, a quarter section.
I got out slid under the fence and my boy let out a long loud "WOOF" It seamed to take for ever for the noise to get out to him, he was trotting along the fence at the
Very end of the peace a 1/4 mile away. It stopped and looked my way . The slight breeze was straight over my shoulder straight at him. I put it dead center shoulder and elevated it a 1/4" above on 4 power and fired.
WAY COOL it slapped him and he was down , blown right off his feet.
The LONG walk out was flat but grassy and he looked like he never even twitched.

My longest kill ever on a coyote and the 22/250. A 1/4 mile is 440 yards so I think it was an honest 420 yard shot...
The 52 gr Berger at around 3800 fps did it's work just fine, but it must be getting quite a bit slower at that ranges , it past clear through the coyote with a tiny hole in each side.

COOL
3 in the box.

D what are your virtues of the 22-250 vs the 223?

After years of shooting I'm looking for a 22 CF. My 243 was my go to varmint gun.

223 is the better of the 2 for fur.
22/250 with the right twist can now be used with bigger bullets for long range stuff.
With the modern rifles and powder you can practically match the 220 swift.
It is a LOT flatter shooting then a 223, brass cost more then 223/556.
In all reality there is not a lot of difference in my mind. I lean to the 22/250 only because of the added speed.
ALL that said...
A 204 matches or Exceeds a 22/250 up to a 45 gr bullet.
Speed. drop, wind IS BETTER then a 22/250 up to a 45 gr bullet.
If your going to run small bullets give it some good thought.

The 204 is impressive and 'they' say it isn't a barrel burner. I want to shoot light bullets, so I'm shying away from the 223. Barrel twists are 1: to 1:9.5 and favor heavier bullets.

do you have a 204? what are your thoughts on it? reloading?

" Are you still working towards a 4 wheeler?"
Wing we got a small 4 wheeler, Now the $$$ will go to the "Water bug" project

"do you have a 204? what are your thoughts on it? reloading? "

Bear
I do not. The D-I-L has one in the TC dimension   , changeable barrel, and loves it. that is "HER" coyote gun. The boy does all the reloading "Brass" not sure what the feed it BUT it is incredibly accrete. And as I said before Equal to the 22/250 and even exceeds it in bullets up to 45 gr bullets. I have shot it , the noise is less the recoil is less, less powder, and the speed it the same. I would recommend it to any one if there not going to go over the 45 gr mark.

"Why only at 4x set on scope?

IBD
That's what I always keep it on when we are calling. I should have jumped it up to 12 but just forgot....

BEAR;

I've always maintained that the smaller the bore, the
harder it is to clean. I think I'll stick to that also.
in other words, I think the .204 is more trouble than
it's worth.

Mister Swift, on the other hand with the modern powders,
keeps it's edge over the .22-250 honed pretty sharp.
Nowadays, getting a 50 grain bullet up to 4K fps isn't
too hard. I'm running 3960 fps with a 50 grain V-max in
my rig. I have no doubt that I could push it faster, but
IMHO there's no reason to. That's where I got an
accuracy node with my gun, so that's where I'm at. And I
can flip the obviously dead bodies just as high, if not
higher. Brass life is good also.

CB I'm quite sure you can push a 50 faster in "Mr swift"
I'm going 3800 with a 52 and Varget out of the 22/250 and it's not topped out either just like you say at the sweet spot.
I prefer the 22's also just saying a 204 is very equal to a 22/250 to the 45 gr mark. I like shooting a bit bigger bullet too. 204 is a lot more fur friendly then a 22o swift and 22/250, If that make any difference.

I really like my .204 for gophers and p'dogs. Like was said
no recoil and quieter than any 22-250. I have been using
32gr either HP's or plastic tips. Have some 40gr but not
yet tried them. U can see the "red mist" in scope cuz of
the very low recoil...way cool!
And CB there is no issue with cleaning except you have to
buy another cleaning rod in .20 cal dia plus jags etc. No
matter the bore size you still have to push a
brush/jag/patch/solution etc down the bore to get it
clean...like any other bore size!
