Fella's;
Went into Scheel's yesterday. Of course I was wandering around in the guns, ammo, and reloading sections. I did happen to be looking at the available powders when one of the employees, white shirt floor manager, came up to me & asked if he could help. I motioned to the list & said something like "It'd really help if you had some RL19 available here". He surprised me by saying "come with me". We went over into guns & he asked one of the guys there if he remembered correctly seeing some RL19 in arrivals. The guy said, "Yeah, 1 and 5 pound jugs, but it's not checked in yet & priced so we can't sell it". I asked if I could reserve a 5 pound jug & got an affirmative reply & told that later that afternoon it'd be out. About 5 PM I got a call from Scheel's saying they were holding my jug at customer service with my name on it. Woo Hoo! And, it was $120.00, about 6 or 7 bucks cheaper a pound buying it that way. I called my son & he picked up a jug of his own. It might be awhile before us dirty hoarders run out. OTOH, I wasn't really well prepared before, and am now. 900F |

Well, working up a new .338 Winchester magnum load just got a lot less traumatic. Now I have enough powder to do a fair amount of experimenting. It's become obvious that the gun likes RL19, and 75.5 grains of it at that. The bullet change from Hornady to Speer seems to have (so far) solved the overpressure problem that raised it's pointy little head a few years ago. Speer lists max load as 78 grains compressed. I'm happy at 75.5 & feel no need to push the envelope. Things will get resolved with seating depth changes I'm pretty sure. The latest shots produced some interesting results. With the OAL at 2.369" to the ogive, velocity averaged 2913 fps, substantially higher than the book suggests it should be. The book says that 78 grains produces 2944 fps. This leads me to believe that the OAL is on the lands. But, accuracy is there and I'm still 2.5 grains under book max. However, being on the lands would explain the higher velocity/pressure. I'm going to play around with this a bit more. After all, I've got the powder, but I'm now into my last box of bullets. Bullets this big come in boxed of 50 from Speer. 900F |
