We all have brother in laws. Mine gave away his guns a few years ago. But over xmas he gave me a plastic bag with 4 green Remington shotgun shells and a half used ancient box of 22 lr. Obviously these were from 50+ years ago, I couldn't even read the shot size on the green roll crimp cases.

Yesterday I was at the range and wanted to check to see if the pattern with my 12 ga 870 red dot sight was centered in the pattern. So I grabbed these junk loads, not caring what the actual pattern was but just it's position.

First shell showed the red dot was centered in the pattern. But I wanted to get rid of the ancient cases; so I reached into the bag and got another, and fired that one. A squib load, a pop and very little recoil, but something cam out of the barrel.

I disassembled it and saw the shell was about 2 inches into the chamber, jammed tight....it was a16 ga shell with now ruptured case walls. Even with my magnified glasses on I couldn't read the markings on the brass, just to old.

Clearly my mistake, all the shells were green and the ones I looked at were 12 ga. I guess I was relying on the color code; but these shells were before coding.

Question:

The lead came out and one shot pellet actually hit the target 25 yards away. Why was the shell pushed up into the chamber. seems the slight pressure would have pushed the case back against the bolt???

Actually I would have thought that the slam home would have moved it up into the chamber so the firing pin would not have hit the primer???????

Humm? Not ever having a 16 I never gave it a though that it would chamber and fire. Just assumed it would fall through. HUMM ?

BEAR;

Never had a 16 either. Dad couldn't ever see a reason for one, and I took that to heart. Twenties and twelves is what I've got & see no need for .410's or 28's.

Extractor must have held shell, until firing pin pushed it into chamber, ignition on old shell must have been slow enough, to let it travel 2", before expanding against chamber walls.

I doubt you hurt 870, they can take a lot of abuse.
