I am working on a gun to shoot semi long range. Not for long range hunting, but steel targets out to 1000 yards. I thought that was long range but after starting this project I found out its not. Anyway, I have been looking at scopes. Lots of decisions. First one is price. I want to stay under $1000. Then their is first focal plane, second focal plane, how much magnifacation. What reticle???? I really don't plan on using the reticle to range targets. I have a range finder for that. I would use it for windage. Would mil dots or moa dots be better? I do know I want the dots to be the same as the turrets. I understand moa better than mills, but I am sure I could figure either one out. I have looked at Vortex. They have some pretty decent scopes that would fit the bill, but I have heard that some people have had problems with them. 900f was right about his comparison with Snap on and Craftsman tools. I would rather not use a warranty. Leupold has several good scopes, I could get a VX-3in this price range. but the ones I have looked at don't have a zero stop on the turrets. I think that would be kinda important to have...Maybe. 900f, Stop reading here. Burris has a relatively new line that has been getting good reviews. The XTR II. Its about $50.00 over my price limit, but I would rather get something I will like a few years from now than save a few bucks. What do you guys think? Wing master |

Wing;
I've used the mil-dot reticle so much, and whenever possible switched all my scopes over to it, that I don't have to "do the math" any more. I just use the system on the fly & seem to have pretty good luck doing it that way. The reason it works for me, of course, is using the system for gopher shooting & getting thousands of rounds of practice a year. There are a couple of outfits that can get you the Zeiss Conquest HD-5 5-25X scope in right at the top of your budget number. Whether or not it's going to have the features & reticle you want may be another story. But, I'd start at the Zeiss website & go from there. You may wish to contact them directly & I've always found them to be very friendly and accommodating. You won't know if they'll build you a scope to your specs if you don't ask. For straight retail sale, check out Camera Land, Optics Planet, and SWFA. 900F |

Good deals can be had online on a used ATN 6x for a starter to see if it's worth pursuing further. Good big glass will set you back quite aways. Hard to find good big glass cheap.
Don't overlook the name brands like Nikon or Leupold. They make fine starter optics for serious LR work. They are not Swarovski or S und B, but more then adequate without needing a second mortgage. |

Thanks guys. D. I sent Klallen a pm. Thanks. JSG, Sorry, but what is a ATN? I have been looking at Leupold but I usually don't think of Nikon when I think of high quality optics. I will look at their offerings. 900f, Do you use the mil dots to range your target? I kinda understand the concept, but never was too good at math. If I was going to try to do that I think a first focal plane would be the way to go. I just wonder if I go that way if the crosshairs would cover up the target when looking at a 1 or 2 foot square plate at 1000 yards. From what I have read, the second focal plane scopes don't really cause this problem. But then again, I never was too good at math. You can get a turret knob made for a Vortex scope that takes the ballistics of your perticular load into account. If you use your range finder and the range is 812 yards, turn the dial to 800 and let her fly. No chart taped to the stock or holding over using dots. I think I can do that kind of math. I never thought about Zeiss. I always think of them being way out of my price range. The HD-5 series looks really promising. Their web site looks like they will make a reticle to your specifications. I havn't seen anything about their turrets, but maybe they make them to order too. Thanks for the input guys. I am not there yet, so keep them coming. Wing master |

Nikon offers special turrets too as do Leupold and as
mentioned Vortex. Nikon does make good glass and they offer a program called Spot-On tailored to their scopes/reticules so you can dial in your range. Check it out here: http://spoton.nikonsportoptics.com/spoton/spoton.html I have 3 of their scopes that use this program. Feed it the data it needs and you are there. Neat! 2 are 6-18x44 w/mil-dot side paralax. 3-9x50 dedicated .22LR mil-dot 50yd paralax |
