Fella's;
I've admired the Cold Steel SRK knife for more than a few years, but never got one for myself. Bought one for my son, and urged a neighbor to get one for his son, which he did, but never got one for my use. Therefore, I've witnessed what they can do, and have been impressed by that. So, Midway is having a knife sale, and the SRK's are included. But, there are now some options with the knife that were never there before and I'm wondering what's up with that? I remember the ads for the older SRK that showed the blade being bent 90 degrees sideways & returning to straight with no damage & always thought "damn, that's gotta be pretty good steel!". But now, at Midway, there's an option to go with Japanese SanMai steel, at about a one third premium in price. The normal SRK is about $68.00 on sale & the San Mai is $93.50, normally about $133.00. It makes me wonder if the original 90 degree steel has been dropped from the base line SRK or not. I'm also wondering if the San Mai steel is really that much better if the base SRK is the original steel. Anybody got any information? 900F |

The original Cold Steel SRK used carbon 5 steel. That's no longer available in the SRK configuration. Presently you have your choice of the standard SRK which used AUS8 stainless, or the San Mai version. The AUS8 knife can be optioned with a black coated blade or the steel colored uncoated. I went ahead and ordered the San Mai. It's come in, but I haven't had a chance to do anything but unpack it. It's a medium/large size belt knife not made for any specific purpose, but I expected that. After all the SRK stands for Survival Rescue Knife. Which means chopping, and that means a good sized implement. Where I've seen them used is as a game field dress knife. They'll do it, and are impressive splitting the breastbone, but are a bit too big for the detail work in the crotch. I actually don't know what I'll do with it, but I sure couldn't pass it up at the price. 900F |

BEAR;
If D'd just pack sardine sammiches, he'd already have a bear, or two. Just don't put 'em in zip-lock baggies, use waxed paper to wrap 'em in. And, of course, have a partner along to watch your back. 900F |
