On a pistol or a revolver...when you test-fire the gun, for accuracy, using a rest, there are some folk that say just rest your barrel, or fore-end on the rest, and there are some that say don't touch the barrel, or the frame on the rest as it won't work right.  What do you say?

I do everything I can not to rest n the barrel. I would think it's easy to
test. Fire a cylinder each way and see if there is any difference?

I put a sandbag under the pistol grip butt; and a bag under the barrel.

On a rifle I'd not rest the barrel,; but a pistol has a short barrel and accuracy isn't going to be great.

Resting both pistol and rifle, the MOST important thing is to have the gun recoil straight back.  If the muzzle on the pistol or rifle is swinging upward, the groups will be large.

Most rifle"sled; and other things are designed to reduce recoil to the shooter; so they give terrible groups as the rifle rise upward rather than back.

With my T/C contenders (30 H and 375 W) I get 1.5 inch groups at 100 yards using sandbags on the barrel and the grip.

I try to rest the frame in front of the trigger guard.

Fella's;

If I rest a pistol, and it's damn rare event when I do,
it's with bottom of the grip on the rest.

For the larger handguns, Blackhawks and the 1911, I put
a sandbag under the grip and another under the frame to
leave the barrel free. For the contender it's more like
a rifle with the fore end setting on the rest. 788

Me - I've found that if I put any part of the pistol on a sand bag rest, I get a different POI from shooting-off hand. I'll use a 2 hand grip on the gun and set the sand bags down such that I can get both wrists solid on the sand bags. This way, If I'm testing ammo, I can get good groups to assess both accuracy and POI.

PS: When shooting revolvers, make sure you include a shot from each cylinder in the group.
