I been shooting grouse with my Encore pistol using a 45 colt/410 barrel and it has been a blast using it. I have not lost a grouse yet, but wanted something with a bit fuller choke to extend the range. So I bought a new H&R youth Parder in 410 with a full choke.  I had an old handi rifle stock laying around so I took off the factory stock and cut the handi rifle stock to this for a pistol grip. I also kept a shortened up the stock but left as a stock so it would not be considered a "other weapon as I first thought of using just a pistol grip. I can still shoulder this if I need to. I figured a tighter choked gun would be better for squirrels too. Kinda my verson of a snake charmer only a shorter stock but a longer barrel by two inches.

Looks good, never underestimate a 410.  It is not a 'kids gun' as most mag writers say.  It is an experts gun.

But the shells are expensive!

Fella's;

Since I'm not an expert, I've always preferred the 20 gauge.  I like to hunt grouse paired with another hunter.  One of us carries a .22 rifle & the other a 20 gauge.

western grouse are like pigeons.  dumb.  they just stand there.  I shot at one (blue/spruce) grouse in WY.  The 22 pistol hit the branch it was sitting upon.  It jumped as the branch fell, to a branch 6 inches higher.  second shot got it in the head.

Try hunting Ruffed grouse...can't be any relation to the western species!

You do know we have ruffed grouse too right ? Fool's hen and sage hen aren't the smartest bird in the flock that's for sure. Look at turkey they will go extinct with out mans help here...But our dusky and sharptail do tend to "Try" to escape death...

I used cap and ball on grouse this year, that evens it up some.  If they have been hunted much, the ruffs can get wise here too.

I load my own 410 shells by hand and put a over the shot card over the shot and seal with either fingernail polish or hot glue. The hulls last a long time then as you do not have a crimp cracking the hulls. If the hulls are cracked where they were crimped I just cut that part off and load them.

HA HA the thing is I enjoy shooting grouse and squirrels with a 410. It does not tear up the meat as bad as with a 12 gauge either. It does not take much to knock down a grouse bearpaws I did it once on the fly when I was a kid. I had a Chesapeake and took my 22 on a walk with her loaded with bird shot for a training tool. I thought maybe I would shoot a few pest birds so she could get the idea. A grouse flushed and I swung up and shot at it and it fell with a broken wing. Yes it was a FLUKE but it did happen. I would have better success with a 410 I think. LOL

I know! Just rufflin the feathers on the old grouse. I used to carry a 20 for all small game and the .357 for the up=close and personal shots on woodcock. I gave up the 20 to a friend in need and just have never gotten around to replacing it. For the bulk of local bird hunting in my area, the trusty little .410 is just a little light. The birds are either at your feet where the .410 shines, or flushing 40 yards ahead of you in heavy cover. Same goes for the bunnies. Walking a fence row in in-climate weather, it would be the appropriate choice.

I prefer to use enough gun. I have never liked the thought of wounding or crippling an animal,(winging included), knowing it could well suffer for days before succumbing to it's wounds. I would rather error to the side of overkill then to risk an off shot.

My .357 shoots a nice pie plate sized pattern at 10 feet. I have never fired it at game past...roughly 15'. Clays on the other hand are a blast inside 20 yards! I still long for a smoothbore .45 colt. or a 629 classic DX with a smoothbore. Same range, just more power and shot.

JSG;

Perhaps you need a Garden Gun, a .22 rimfire smooth-bore.  They're next-to-impossible to find anymore, but cheap when you do.

I'm not the shotgun guy & would no more attempt game shots with a pistol than try convincing D. Trump esq. to give me a coupla mil just 'cause I asked him nice.  My favorite shottie is my Franchi Veloce with an English straight stock, and 20 gauge 26" barrels.

I have been using a Encore pistol for the past 5 years and have not lost a grouse yet. Of course no wing shots. This shotgun should be even better yet for what I want it for.  For walking trails I would use my 12 gauge where flying shots would be the norm.

Dunno bout them bein an EXPERTS gun. I bot my son a
Mossberg 410 pump last year. Hes a small guy and his
older sisters 20 gauge knocked him round some. This is
what he has.

We havent been out huntin or anything really serious but
we have shot some clays and some stills. He aint too bad
with it. I'm really proud of him for stickin with it. I
think a couple more years and he'll be ready for his
sisters 20. That is IF I can get it away from her. Probly
be just a lot easier to buy him a different one.

I guess you cud call it a truck gun. I bot a Tarus Judge a
year or so ago and 1 of our local gun shows. I had been
wantin one for a little while but I didnt like the short
barrels. FINALLY........ I found a Satin finished 6"
barrel, it was used of course but not very much. I bot it
from a guy that we had dun business with in the past so I
trusted him. I got it worth the money I think. Its fun to
shoot and easy to handle. I also like the fact that I can
shoot 45 LC also. I think even 454 Casull. I know the newer
ones are said to be able to handle it. I dont think I'll be
shootin anythin quite that heavy anyway. But, if I have the
option, it'd be cool.

Well after shooting the shotgun I found the patterns were no better than ny Encore. I will do some more experimenting with it but I think I will stick with the Encore Pistol for now it is handier. I will still keep the shotgun though.
