Fella's;

I'm getting more than a bit irritated with our optics providers marketing departments. Specifically, rifle scopes and mil-dot reticles.

To my mind the mil-dot is the best hunting reticle available at this time. It should be available in just about any scope you want to buy, regardless of exterior finish or power. The idea that the mil-dot must be limited to the "tacticool" matte finish scope gravels me.

The reticle is far less cluttered than all the Rapid-Z types, offers windage options that the now-much-touted BDC types don't, and simply outshines the traditional cross-hairs in utility of use. But somebody with a BIG pocketbook better help your bank account if you want that reticle in a gloss or silver finish scope. Go ask a glass maker's custom shop the price of a fixed six with a mil-dot, I'll bet you'll be less than satisfied with both the answer and the attitude with which it was given. There's a major optics supplier of rifle scopes that also seems to think that there's very little need for the standard 1/4" click turrets on their mil-dot scopes. They cite the need for rapid vertical adjustment in a tactical situation. I'd like the industry standard for adjustments in a hunting situation. But, I'm not supposed to hunt with that type of reticle in my scope I guess. Use a Boone & Bull, or go someplace else seems to be the attitude there. Want a gloss scope with a mil-dot reticle? Perhaps for a custom gun where the finish of the scope needs to match that of a fine blue job? Don't hold your breath, ain't gonna happen. You can, if you search long enough, get a mil-dot in a 30mm tube, but only in matte.

I think that the reticle is more than good enough to be presented in a much larger selection of glass in any good optics makers scope line. And I'm pretty much inclined to keep my money in my bank account till I can get what I want.

While I don't agree with you on mil-dots....you are right, they should offer them in gloss models.

If you look at scopes, handguns and rifle you can get an idea as to what "people want".  "Zombie" this and that.  "Bone Collector". Plastic anything as long as it is black or camo.  Rubber coated stocks (life about 8 years).  Tactical everything.  can't get to many piccanny tactic rails on your hunting gear.

Sort of tells you where the shooting market is headed!

BEAR;

And that may be a reflection of all the recent veterans returning from active duty & staying with what they're familiar with.  I do think it's ironic that on the one hand the gummint is trying to fight private gun ownership & on t'other is, via military service, training large numbers of civilians to use firearms.

What is new.  the government being consistent or intelligent?

Just found out that the government has legislated  to save energy.  sounds good.   Beginning January 1 2014 it will be illegal to sell  60 watt light bulbs...they will be 55 watt bulbs now.  To the idiots in DC it spells a 10% reduction in energy.  to me it means I'll be buying 75 watt bulbs, so I can see; but considering the mandate to us compact floro bulbs (which cost more and used more energy) I guess it makes "government sense".

i'm with ya on the appreciation for mil dots reticles, cb.  i love'm.  i have a scope with a classic mil dot or other reticles offering various vertical and horizontal markings on nearly every rifle i own.

regarding the selection available, i've never felt lacking for choices but i also admit i've never been one to need a silver scope on a stainless rifle; or a glossy blue scope and a brightly blued rifle.  matching color just isn't a priority of mine.  that said, i'm a proponent of having as many choices we can have as consumers so expanding what's already available certainly wouldn't be a bad thing.  i've just always been able to find what i wanted as things currently stand.

i have a feeling my next one will be of the super sniper variety from swfa.  probably their fixed 12x42 tactical.  a 20x would be on my .338am now if they'd have been available.  i just love the price ($299) and the reticle :

i really like the see-through whole marks and hash halves.  i'll have a rifle soon that'll need a scope and think this one will be on it.

Klallen;

So did you get the rifle? Did the SWFA scope get put on it, & if so, did it stay on it? If you like that reticle as shown on your post, you should check out Hawke Optics. They call their's a half-mil-dot reticle. I put one of their 3-12X A/O .5 mil-dot scopes on a 10/22 I've got. Pretty good glass for under $200.00. I don't think I'd buy another though as I find the reticle a bit too busy. OTOH you might really like it.

Personally I don't want an A/O scope on a game-hunting gun. I regard it as just one more thing to go wrong at the wrong time, but that's me.

I picked up one of their mil/mil 20x, last year. It's real handy not having to convert to moa from mils.
