Fella's;

As the time approaches that we move permanently to the ranch, and the van ages as well, it's time to contemplate the van's replacement.  Mrs. 900F wants a four wheel drive, and I can't blame her, there are occasions when it's more than just "nice" to have when you're living in the boonies.

I'd prefer to buy American and I'd also prefer to avoid the Ford Motor Company in any of it's various iterations.  It's not a case of once bitten twice shy, it's twice bitten and the sheepherder's academy - flock-U.  Regardless of my preferences however, I do believe that Nissan's Pathfinder will get a serious review.  But, if I remember correctly, some of the members here have GM SUV's, so what's the take on them from the owner's?  I'd like to hear from anybody who's had real world experience with them, excluding "those" products please.

My wifes vehicle since 2006 has been a Chevrolet Tahoe. We bought it used with about 20 thousand miles on it. We take it on trips but other than that she drives it around town. It has about 85 or 90 thousand miles on it.

I have exactly zero complaints about this vehicle. In that time I have replaced the transfer case actuator. (Electric shifter) Thats all. I change the oil when the light comes on saying it needs changed. It has had Mobil-1 since we have had it.

It gets 19 miles to the gallon on the highway and I drive it like I stole it. No telling what the mileage would be if I drove the speed limit.

I do think it would be worth your time to look at one.

Hey you didn't ask about Toyotas . We've had all GM's for most of our live's there's 3 old one's in the shop that are not for sale. And I live where a good percent of Nissans are made, and pride fully driven by a ton of Tenn. folks. . I think I will stay with the Toyota's though for new vehicles ,My 94' runner has 200K without a blip, my wife's 04' runner has 110k on it and run's like a new car. My 94' by the way is a 5-speed and I have out climbed and sloshed along some nasty stuff and never has it let me down. I now drive an 06' Tacoma sport. My son's both drive Tacoma's ,one after being a die hard Dodge truck nut. They run, they are dependable, and here's the biggy,customer service. After being in the car business for a long time, in my you't, they take way better care of us. OK so ya didn't ask about Toyotas. LOL

On the GMC side, in my family.

Just looking at the PRESENT gas mileage:

Suburban 2012 v-8- 14000 miles--on road mileage, hilly country--21.2 MPG

Tahoe 1997 large v-8--200,000+ miles--mileage--around town-- 18.0 MPG

Envoy 2003 large L6--150,000 miles--on interstate hilly--20.5 mpg.

service records have been good to average on these.  Tahoe had/has a electric glitch with intermittent shorts, occasional dead battery.  It is my brother who never spends any money on repairing vehicles, he installed a 2nd battery and a cross over switch.

The Envoy has been good except for the plastic radiator and power steering cooler.  These are non-moving parts, that were easily replaced.

I would buy the identical Envoy (even the color) if available.  will probably buy a Tahoe or Suburban if available next year if no Envoys.

I use 4WD on  a weekly schedule.  I bought the Envoy because it has electric FWD shift switch and had the traditional  ranges:2WD, 4WD High, 4WD LOW, and Automatic 4WD.  I have a front and rear mount winch, never been stuck or had to use the winch.  I run Kelly Safari Signature tires and get 75+K on a set without rotation.

I believe there are a lot of great SUV and 4WD trucks out there.  I buy for the long duration.

PS my wife just bought a Buick Verona loaded.....I obviously have zero influence there!  Red!

Tikka;

I have nothing against Toyotas at all, just didn't specifically mention them.  The only reason I did call out the Pathfinder was that I had rented one in the distant past & was very favorably impressed with it on a 1200 mile trip with two major & one minor mountain pass.  Hmmm, which brings up a memory that I'd surpressed.

Was forced to rent an Explorer in more-or-less the same time frame,  and it was equipped with the infamous Firestone tire.  I'd gone over Togwotee and Teton passes, the majors, with no problems whatsoever.  Then came the little one and the fun began.  In a downhill gentle right long curve at sane & legal speed, the SOB just had the tires let go with no warning.  I was drifting to the outside of the turn!  Fortunately I had plenty of time to slow & get it under control & the vehicle coming at me was well off in the distance.  When I returned the Explorer I made sure they knew what I thought of it.

Then recently I had to make keys for a 94 Pathfinder.  That one I was told had well over 200K on it, & it was in pretty damn good shape too.  I was again impressed, and there ya are.

The one thing I'd like to avoid if at all possible is the exotic keys.  I don't need no steenkin' chips, worm-tracks, or sidewinders.  Not even a leetle bit.

Over the years we have had most brands of vehicles. We live
in a rural area that some kind of 4x4 is needed in the
winter to get to the house. The one that works the best bey
far for my wife is a subaru outback. We currently have a
2010 outback it is the second one we have had. Both have
been very reliable and not give us any issues other than
normal service stuff. The two big advantages are AWD so my
wife don't have to think about when to put it in 4 wheel
drive and it gets 29-30 MPG.
