Fella's;

I got the 6mm back from the smith Friday night.  He had recrowned the barrel for me.  I spent part of the evening fitting the barreled action to the stock & then pulling it out again, and again, and again.

The reason for the recrowning was that the barrel had just been chopped off in a bandsaw.  Not even at a 90 degree angle.  Therefore, it wouldn't shoot regardless of what else was tried.  It was pretty apparant that a lot of trying had been done.  The barrel channel had been opened up to free float.  The action & channel had been acra-glassed.

So I opened up the barrel channel once again to free float the tube.  I left about 2 inches from the recoil lug forward bedded & sanded it out from there.  Here's a little trick.  In a channel with a fairly sharp taper like this one, use 3/8" & 1/4" drive deep well sockets as your sanding mandrel.  Take short strokes with about a 150 grit paper & it's an easy job to open it up evenly.  Just takes patience & several fittings of the stock to the action.  By the way, acra-glass sands easier than wood.

When I had fitted the action to the stock to my satisfaction, it was time to mount the scope rings to the base.  In the past I had a machinist turn a one foot long piece of 1" bar stock down to .998 for me.  I use this to turn the front ring in & make sure the front & rear rings are aligned & level.  Much easier to do it this way than to crimp a scope tube & then search for the problem.  I used a set of Leupold low matte extended rings to mount the Weaver V9 in.  Everything fits with no excess rise & the scope ocular is back where I like it.  The scope optical center is nicely low & close to the bore center.

Tasunk came over on Saturday & we went to the range in the afternoon.  Got it bore sighted & shot some 'groups' with it using the box of ammo that came with the rifle when I bought it.  That load, using Rem cases, was with a Sierra 75 gr HP over 41 gr of IMR 4320 & a CCI primer at an OAL of 2.820.

The 'groups' were somewhat influenced by a gusting 90 degree crosswind.  The kind of wind that could, and did, blow my spotting scope off the bench.  The gentle wafting gusts that could make the cross hairs move an inch with no warning at all.  The kinda wind that made you realize that you weren't absolutely sure whether it was you or the target stand that moved.   Then the truth hits you, it was both.

I'm going to cold blue the muzzle & wait for a calmer day to do some actual accuracy work with it.  But overall, I'm satisfied.  I'll chrono the rest of these handloads & then start load development work with new brass.  My data book says that 2.820 is .005 less than max OAL, but these loads felt just a little tight as the bolt came down.

More later, gopher shooting tomorrow, Monday the 23rd.  900F
