i had to write an essay on a president and i chose Ronald Reagan because in my opinion hes the best and i felt like sharing it with you
Ronald Reagan
Ronald Reagan was born on 6 February 1911 in Tampico Illinois. He was the fortieth president of the United States, served 8 years, two terms from 1981-1990 and was the oldest elected to the presidency at age 69. He died at the age of 93 on 5 June 1994 in Los Angeles California.
In 1980’s general election he beat incumbent Jimmy Carter 489 to 49 in electoral votes with 51% of the popular vote. In his inaugural address on 20 January 1981 he said truthfully,” Government is NOT the solution to our problems, Government IS the problem'. During his inaugural address, 52 United States hostages held in Iran for 444 days were released. Jimmy Carter tried unsuccessfully to negotiate with them during the last weeks of his presidency to have the hostages released but the funny part is they were released during Reagans inaugural address, that should tell you something right there. On 30 March 1981 he had an assassination attempt. Secret Service agents shoved him in the back of his limo, once inside aides discovered Reagan had been hit. At the hospital he told his wife, “Honey, I forgot to duck”, sending a clear message: You don’t mess with the Bull Elephants. Within weeks Reagan was back to work.
On the domestic front Reagan advanced policies that reduced social problems and restrictions on business. Tax cuts were implemented to stimulate the United States economy. He also advocated for increases in military spending, reduction in certain social programs and measures to deregulate business. By 1983 the nation’s economy began to recover and according to economists entered a SEVEN year period of prosperity.
The most pressing Foreign policy issue of Reagans first term was the Soviet Union, dubbing the Soviet Union “The Evil Empire”, Reagan began a massive build up of U.S. troops and weapons. In 1983 he announced the Strategic Defensive Initiative, nicknamed Star Wars, a plan aiming to develop space based weapons to protect America from attacks by soviet nuclear weapons. In the middle east Reagan sent 800 marines to Lebanon as part of an international peace keeping force in June 1982. Nearly a year later in October 1983, suicide bombers attacked the Marines barracks in Beirut killing 241 Americans. That same month, Reagan ordered U.S. forces to invade the Caribbean Island of Grenada after Marxist rebels overthrew the government. In November 1984 Reagan was re-elected in a total domination, defeating democratic challenger Walter Mondale. Reagan carried 49 of 50 states in the election and received 525 of 538 electoral votes, the largest EVER won by a presidential candidate. His second term was tarnished by the Iran-Contra Affair a convoluted “arms for hostages” deal with Iran to funnel money in Central America. He initially denied knowing about it, but later announced it was a mistake.
Also during his second term Reagan forged a diplomatic relationship with the re-form minded Mikhail Gorbachev, chairman of the Soviet Union. In 1987 the Americans and Soviet Union signed a historic agreement to eliminate intermediate range nuclear weapons. That same year Reagan spoke at Germany’s Berlin Wall giving the famous “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall” line. Twenty nine months later Gorbachev allowed the people of Berlin to dismantle the wall ending Soviet domination of East Germany and successfully ending the cold war.
After leaving the white house Reagan and his wife returned to their home in Los Angeles California. In 1990 Reagan returned to Germany, just weeks before Germany was fully reunified, and with a hammer took several symbolic swings at a remaining chunk of the wall. In 1991 the Ronal Reagan Presidential Library and Museum opened in Simi Valley California. In November 1994 Reagan revealed in a hand written letter that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Nearly a decade later on 5 June 2004 he died at his Los Angeles home at the age of 93 making him the nations longest lived president, in 2006 Gerald Ford surpassed him in this title. A state funeral was held in Washington D.C. and Reagan was buried on the grounds of his presidential library in California.
Without a doubt Ronald Reagan was one of our best presidents we ever had. He had a good balance on the economy, had a lot of foreign matters to deal with and ended the cold war with Russia. If that stuff in Libya had happened during his presidency we would be reminding them why the second line of the marine theme song is “To the Shores of Tripoli”, not apologizing for it and saying why its our fault.
