I figure a decent hunting and all around knife would be a good add-on for the x-mas list. I like the idea of the KA-BARs and was going to ask for it, but figured I'd ask here first. They seem to be pretty strong, made of 1095 HC steel, and have a good rep. Only questions are what is the Krayton handle like, is it a rubberided coating, and do they hold their edge? I know Mr Mom swears by his (add info for me here Al) and so do others, any coments or suggestions on these or similar knives? I might run to Mad town tomorrow, not sure if I'll get anything tomorrow, but answer ASAP, x-mas is coming up quick.

I should be a tad more specific. The one I'm looking at has the 6" or so blade, 12" overall, all black powder coated, model 1257

i've got the exact same knife, except it has the leather-disk handle. even if i didn't have the elather-disk handle, i would prefer it, because it provides a great grip, keeps in with the tradition of the Ka-Bar, and it SMELLS great too! seriously, leather or synthetic, it is all the same...a GREAT knife....just depends on your preference.... |

Well I put one on order today. I was going to get it through my local smith but the cost doubled by the time he figured in extra small order handling and shipping. He's a good friend and understood, actually told me to find somewhere else. Found one new on ebay for $24.99, $34 shipped with insuranse. I went the synthetic handle with serrated edge, it took a while to debate with or without. Should be here by X-mas.

BKC; Some other suggestions. Although I understand that you've got the Ka-Bar coming, one knife simply is not enough. I have, or have had, at least one of all of the following. Puma: German made, get one at least 10 years old, or a brand new one. For a while there, they went from the family owned business into a profit-centered corp & you know what that did to quality. The company is now under new management & is returning to the traditional standards, having been financially spanked for forgetting. The old ones are among some of the best production line knives available. I've bought several. Smokey Mtn. Knife Works or Natchez can source them for you. Buck: I've got a couple of the Vanguards. One with & one without the gut-hook. These have the Rubber handles & that's nice on a working hunting knife. They are fairly inexpensive now, about $45.00. The price reflects the steel also. They are good enough, but I won't bust a gut if I lose one either. I couldn't prove it, but I don't think the steel is as good as it was 20 years ago. 900F

I've got a few other knives, thought I'd give one with a rep a shot. I've got an older buck 4" folder that it ok, doesn't stay out if you hit it hard, the lock is worn and it folds up to easily. Another is a 'western' that was my moms, it is about a 5" straight blade, kind of a cheapy, a little flimsy and holds an ok edge. I do have an old German utility straight blade from around the 20's I beleive, it stays sharp, but isn't 100% and I keep it as a just because knife. Maybe I should post a pic of it and see if it is what I was told. I won't be out much if it is junk as I found it, but a guy I work with says he has one just like it and they were made 1920's era. It says Sabre Monarch 131 or 737 on one side of the blade and Solingen Germany on the other. Any ideas? Edited by bkcorris |

bkc - this would make an excellent new topic. copy and paste, and title the thread "knife identification" or something like that. it would also have the advantage of possibly being more visible to people if they see that question, and could increase your chances of a positive ID! |

Knife thoughts. Ever hunter needs a few good quality big knifes...even though they are very impractical. On price you can’t' beat the BUCK. I have a Puma White Hunter, the highest quality, a very hard blade, tough to sharpen, but after the diamond lap, it will last a long time. And I like the extra blade Weight. As their ads use to show, you can ram it thru a half dollar coin. I had to try it when I was about 25 years old. Solingen bone handle knives made in Germany, I’ve got one that fits in a sheath that I built into my leather archery back quiver. It has been there at least 40 years. Great steel and a slender beauty. Most of my big knives have bone handles, but Leather is beautiful and if you ever gut an animal in sub-zero weather much more hand friendly. My most used knife is a double blade folding wooden handle 3 inch L.L. Bean knife in a hand made leather belt sheath. IMHO it is the best usable knife. The prettiest knife I own is a hand made custom knife with a scrimshaw walrus handle with a group of Canadian geese carved into the handle. I only carry it for show and they loved it in the big hotels in Africa. Cost me more than $500 (I’m embarrassed to say how much). One should not drink and bid at Ducks Unlimited National conventions. Here it is. I think the leather handled one would be a great choice as well, plus it would have military markings. The polymer should do me well with my use and abuse. |

I am a Marine, and oddly I am no fan of the Kabar. I haven't had good luck with them. I carry a John Ek field knife. He is famous for his commando knives and I got his field knife in a close out sale. I also have a Cold Steel Voyager that never leaves my side (except in airports) and a great folding knife that I got from TasunkaWitko in like 1985 for a back up. I have to say, for the money you can't go wrong with Cold Steel, mine is half serated. I have never sharpened it once, and after 2 years, if finally will no longer shave hairs.

I work with a medicly retired former USMC officer, and he strongly dislikes Kabars. He said his troops (and himself) were constantly breaking them.

Fella's; I've got my Dad's Kabar marked USN 1. It's leather handled & has obviously 'been around the block a time or two'. Taz has seen the blade. I don't use it any more, there's too much history tied up in it. My Dad went into Guadalcanal with the 1st Marine Division in 1942. 900F |

tasunkaWitko, Still got it. I broke about 1/4 inch off the tip on a deployment, but I went down to the machine shop and reshaped the blade a little. I wish I could remember the brandname but it is sitting in a drawer at home. I also have a leatherman tool, one the original style and an SOG brand pocket tool. The SOG is a big upgrade, it has both serated and regular blades with chisel points. I tend to treat these things as tools and not knives. If I am carrying one, I also carry a knife that fits whatever activity I am doing. |

triggerguard, I have seen them broken and bent fairly easily. However, we tend to use our gear pretty hard. There is a saying in the USMC, if you put a Marine in closed room with two ball bearings and come back in a couple of hours, one will be broke and the other missing. And it is worse in real combat when you are not charged for your missing and destroyed equipment. |

Hardcorps, in my work, it is well known that the bulk of Marine equipment is cast offs from the other services. Their tanks leak, their helos and jets leak, their guns, though cast off also, are kept as clean as an operating room. The main thing is, that the Marines are the first to go, and usually, if not always, get the job done. I, personally, wouldn't take a Kabar as a gift, but there IS a mystique connected with it. My personal preferences run towards the Puma. I have a friend that got shot in the Randall in Mogidishu (sp) and the AK round, cracked the blade back to the spine, making the knife all but useless. They wouldn't even trade him out with a new knife. Can you imagine how much they lost in advertisements alone? Anyway, I tip my hat to you for your using the castoffs to the greatest effect.................Kingpin

I've got a set from Bark River that I have used a couple seasons. Seem to hold an edge well. I think the caper is too small for elk. A smidge bigger would be nice. I've also got a skinner and a drop point Fox River model. My skinner is no longer available, but they've got plenty of models, including the Professional line. Good stuff, and not too expensive. I also have a KOA Handmade Series knife that I've retired. It will be handed down to my grandson.
