Got a S&W 460 8" barrel had it lock up on me twice. Couldn't pull the trigger, pull the hammer back, or get the cylinder to pop out. Took it apart and it fixed it still don't know what the problem was. Anybody else experiencing this?

No experience like you describe but just some questions that may get you pointed in a problem solving direction.

What did you mean when you said you "fixed" it but couldn't find anything wrong?  Just get in unjammed or ????

......could it be an ammo problem vs gun mechanical problem?

Was the lock up each time after firing a round ?

Was there still live ammo in cylinder when this happened? if so then maybe.....
High primer?

A weak crimp on bullet could cause these situations.....
Bullet "jump"?
Bullet set back into cartridge? recoil induced maybe..this can increase pressures

Excessive pressure from reloaded ammo?
Wrong powder?
Primers backing out from excess pressure?

All M-T brass in cylinder when it locked up?

pretty soon maybe a S&W guru will come around to help out..........

Thanks for the reply Brid Dog:

There was still loaded ammo but the bullets were not pulled by the recoil, The primers were seated correctly from what I remember but, you my have something there. I can remember seeing like there was something hung up on the primer. The brass has been reloaded several times. I use Hornady brass, CCI large rifle primers, Hornady 240 gr bullets, and 47 grains of H110. I did by some new Straline brass for it. Thanks again for you reply

Back in the dark ages I had a PPC gun that had been built on a Ruger Security Six frame.  I had similar problems from the day I got it.  Turns out the crane was bent from somebody slapping the cylinder shut.  It may be worth having Smith or a 'smith take a look.  good luck, 788

If the brass had been shot/reloaded several times or with high pressures just maybe the primer pockets are a bit over sized....& the primers back out under that heavy recoil.  Did the primers have sheer marks on them like they had been scraped hard when the cylinder turned or tried to turn???

Now 788's comment reminded me too of an incident similar to yours only with a .22LR gun.  The face of the cylinder was not square with the bbl and it would bind when the high side came around...that was a factory type of fix....sent it back to them.

don't remember about the primers, I did send it back when I first bought it because I couldn't get it to group well. Now I can hit a milk jug @ 210 yards off a rest. I think its the old brass. Thanks

The new brass was the key, no more issues. Like to hit a deer at 200 yards with it someday.

I don't use CCI primers, they erode the primer pocket and the primers can back out if you aren't monitoring what's happening...................Kingpin

Thedad;

In revolvers using high pressure cartridges, I have seen reloaded brass expand just above the rim.  Low enough that a full length size die doesn't take care of it & it bulges enough to make seating the case in the cylinder tough.  These also were a screaming b!tch to eject.

OTOH, I've been using CCI primers for a long-long-long time & never had a problem that could be directly attributed to them.
