... i have a savage 111 gt hunter in .270 that's worn 3 different scopes in the last 9 years i've owned it. i'll find a better place for the scope it has and then have to replace. well, i'm there again. i'm looking at 2 scopes on sale in the $300 range at midway :
weaver tactical grand slam 3-10x40mm mil-dot $399.99 on sale for $299.99 nikon buckmasters 6-18x40mm mil-dot $369.99 on sale for $309.99 right now, i'm leaning towards the weaver. it's reference points appear to be much finer then those on the nikon however, i've never used either make or model on any of my rifles. would appreciate hearing any experience on the grand slam or buckmasters line of scope the membership might have. positive or negative. thanks. k |

About 20 years ago I went shopping for a scope thinking I'd come
home with a Leupold and due to a side by side comparison brought home a Weaver T15. Couple years ago it wouldn't hold zero even on a .22 LR. I sent it in and got back a new Grand Slam 4.5-16. So far I really like it. Warranty as good a Leupold. I have two Nikons but find them unremarkable. They work but don't find them that bright and are fairly heavy for their size. Never had any problems with them but prefer the Weavers I've owned. None of the above were mil dot or Buckmasters but you may draw some conclusions. DD |

i've heard great things about both, but no real-life experience with either one - the one weaver that i've used was really nice, so i would lean toward that one personally, but i have "heard" that nikon's optics are outstanding, which is of course important.....it sounds like the weaver "feels" more right to you when you're looking through it, so in the end your first impression might be the way to go. |

thanks for the reviews, gents. spent the day looking at alternatives. burris' new fullfield e1 scopes look really good for the price. that floating b-plex e1 reticle is neat. used to only be available on their 6x premium line of scope but now comes in these nifty little packages. got alot of faith in the fullfield II line of scopes and this line is supposed to only build upon that quality. another option and i love options.

at this point, i'm 80% certain i'm going with one of the burris e1's. haven't figured out yet if i want to go the economical route and just get the 3-9x for the .270 and be done with it or move the 3-12x tasco titan (great scope) off the .280ai over to the .270 and then add $150 for the 4.5-14x e1 i'd get for the .280 . still have to work that one out.
i always thought it'd be neat if i had the $$$ to buy all these scopes i'd love working with when they were on sale like the weaver and nikon are now. just have them stored at the house and when a new rifle came home, the glass would be there waiting. just isn't in the cards for me, though. funny coincidence ... zeiss has been suggested to me a couple times. i believe a conquest.?.?.? just got the same e-mail promo the rest of you sci members did. $150 off a zeiss purchase. sweet !!! could have changed this whole thing. the catch ... i gotta buy a new remington700 to get the deal. what the heck? lol. horrible thing to pull on a feller looking for a scope. k |

I gots both a Weaver Grand Slam and a Nikon Buckmasters 6-18 A/O. Take the Weaver. I've also been trying to find a good reason to buy that Weaver Tactical, I think it'd be an outstanding piece of glass. That being said, I won't touch another Burris with the crappy end of a ten-foot barge pole. Had more than one, and all junk. FOO |

the real problem with scopes like the Bushnell, Weaver, Tasco and Nikon is that they are no longer being make in Japan. I see Korea, Phillipines, and China on most all of them. Leupold and Redfield are all that is left with decent glass and mechanicals. And I'm not sure about Redfields after shooting a box out of a 270 with a Redfield. House brands are the bottom of the barrel with me. |

the fullfield e1 4.5-14x42mm arrived today. some subtle differences here and there, but basically quite similar in size and design to a fullfield II 4.5-14x42mm :
i was going to switch out the odd-ball off-set weaver rings but they've just become part of this rifle : it's kind of a homely thing, anyway. i suspected i was going to have to remove the raised rear site for the larger objective to fit but as it turned out having a comfortable, full fov there was plenty of room. on low power you can just see it (if you look for it) at the bottom of the scope picture. on higher power (where it'll be), it's not visable, so i just left it. the factory maple stock's what made this rifle interesting to me. up till purchase time, i'd not personally seen a savage come from the factory with maple : this has always been a rifle i'd always planned to have something built on. it being a .270 was the downfall of the whole thing, in my opinion. i just can't come up with a game plan. so for now, i grudgingly own (and occasionally hunt with) a .270 . lol. k |
