Fella's; Both Saturday & today, Garou & I went to the range. Things went pretty well. In 2006 Garou aquired a Winchester model 70 classic stainless in .300 Winchester magnum. However, due to practical circumstances, he has never been able to actually develop a load for it, or sight it in. We got that rectified this weekend. I don't know why the gun was on the used rack at one of the local emporiums, but, just my opinion mind you, whoever traded it in was a blithering idiot. I have never seen a gun so willing to shoot extremely well with whatever fodder was given to it. As long as it was pushing 180 grain bullets however. Winchester's 180 grain Power Points at 100 yards, 1-hole five shot groups. Tried a ladder from 73.8 to 75.2 grains of RL19 also. That put four into one hole with an 8-tenths variation in the powder charge! Yikes, what more could you ask for? So, I'd say the kid is covered as far as hunting goes this year. Just to keep ourselves occupied, we'll have to see what can be done with developing a load for 150 grain bullets. OTOH, with his Swede there's no real need, so no great loss if it doesn't work out. I took out my Swede & confirmed that it knows how to shoot. The 200 yard groups were pretty damn nice if I do say so myself. I'd foolishly altered my seating die to change the crimp. My time would have been better spent dropping bricks on my foot. But, I have finally gotten the sweet spot back & will NOT f--k with the dies again. Though I could get a Redding micrometer seating die & then pull the innards from this one & use it as just a crimp die. Hell, I'd only have to spend another hundred & a quarter to satisfy that whim. Or, I could just leave well enough alone - if I've learned my lesson. Decisions, decisions. Tikka .30-06 is a sweetie & can completely, reliably, get the job done. Confirmed zero, checked the load on the chrono, and will clean. The Browning T-bolt .22 magnum got taken out too. Mostly because I haven't shot it for awhile and it's always a good idea to get the trigger finger & eye warmed up before proceeding to the real work. I've found that it really does make a difference in accuracy to do some warm-up work with a low cost rimfire before getting down to business with the high priced shooters. In any case, there's work to be done. For what Browning asks for these, there are a number of things that could be better. Accuracy for one. Though a good deal of that problem might be cured with a decent trigger. But why can't you get that from the factory? For a .22 that gets kissin'-close to $700.00, the wood's pretty plain also. The magazines are not only hideously expensive, but hard as hell to find as well. Forty-five dollars for a magazine for a .22! That's just nuts, and a big reason why I have just the one that came with the gun. Yeah, that's right, a rimfire gun that sells a loooong way to the right of half a C-note and you get one magazine. Things will be done! 900F Edited by CB900F |
