simple question     ...     what are the velocities you guys are getting with your max loads in this cartridge using a 90 gr. bullet (hornady's xtp particularly)?

i went into my development project using hornady's data as my reference point.  their max charge being 14.2 grs. h110, starline brass, fed105 primer, 1.320" oal, averaging 1700 fps in a cz52.  for my development  i choose to use cci500's rather then the fed's and from the get-go, i knew i wasn't seeing 1700 fps by the time i reached the book max charge of 14.2 grs.    my average was right at 1520 fps.  on my second range session, i loaded up the same 14.2 grs, seated the bullet to an even 1.300" oal and the average jumped to 1570 fps.  i don't want to go any shorter with the cartridge length.  and i don't really want to try and cram more powder under the bullet for a compressed load.  so i'm thinking two things :

1) apply a heavier taper crimp with the current load, amp up the working pressures with that crimp and try to gain some of the missing velocity that way

or

2) settle on the notion that 1700 fps just isn't going to be feasible in my particular cz52 and be happy with the 1570

are any of you tok handloaders seriously seeing 1700 fps in your cz52's?

thanks much.

still interested in your results ... but ... i think i'm stopping where i'm at.

did some more searching on the www this morning. seems like most of the data i'm seeing from handloaders out there, regardless of the various primer / powder combinations they're using, are topping anywhere from the lower 1400's to the upper 1500's in velocity with an 87 - 90 gr. bullet.

add to this, some reports of cz52 blow-up's. i have seen some handloading data companies revamping their original tok loads to lesser pressure levels. one such company being aa, who changed things up from a 13.1 grs. #9 max load for an 85 gr. bullet in 2000 to a revised 2005 load that's printed at 10.4 grs. no real solid reason given but it seems like the most likely reason would be a soft spring that just wasn't handling the pressures of a modern max load, causing initial cracking as the slide slammed back into the frame under recoil; ultimately leading to the 52's failing completely (handgun blow-up). understand, i've no experience with this. i've not seen this. it's something just read.

irregardless, i think i'm gonna stick with 1570 fps (+/-) and be happy with it.

K   I need some help here.  I'm not at all familiar with the 7.62x25.  Is that the same as the Russian Tokarev cartridge that was made in a clone of the Colt pocket pistol?

Don't own any CZs.  but it sounds like you have a european model CZ in a pistol cartridge, sort of like a 32 colt auto???  Is CZ importing these rifle now?  sounds interesting.

yes indeed, bear.  the 7.62x25 and the tok are one in the same.

my cz52 semiauto handgun has a c.a.i. outa georgia, vt engraved into the side of the slide.  i would imagine this was the importer of my particular handgun, but i don't know for certain.  i bought the thing for 150 clams at one of our local gun shows several years back so don't know for sure how it made its way into the states.  it's been a fun one to work with.  and for $150, it's cheap fun, too.

talk to ya later.
