Connecticut is allowing revolvers to be used for deer hunting this fall for the first time. The state regs specifically prohibit semi-autos and single shots. The autos I get, they somebody going out with a Desert Eagle or hi-cap 9mm and blazing away. Single shots, I'm not sure I get. My TC would do just fine. Anyway, it's got to be a revolver in a caliber larger than .357 Mag.
I didn't want to mess with my 45 LC 4 5/8" Blackhawk fungun, so I did the Great Gun Shop Tour of 2011 and found a 45LC Blackhawk that had seen better days. No rear sight and a bit of surface rust. I got it for a good price and off to the 'smith it went. The 7 1/2" tube got chopped to 6" to make it more manageable. I had him drill and tap the top strap to take a Weigand mount. For optics I went with an Interaims OneV30 that I had in the safe. The grips are Hogue. I tried Ruger factory and a set of Jay Scott's. Too hard to control with heavy recoil loads. After 11 different loads, I'm working with a 255 gr. Keith (Lyman 452424) on top of 16.2 gr. of 2400. It'll group reliably into 2" at 25 yds when benched and bagged. The group in the photo measures 1 3/4". I'm still sorting out a holster though I'm leaning towards a drop leg stye from Skyball Mountain. I hunt with a backpack and the drop loop will put it strong side below the waist strap. It'll go back to the 'smith in the spring for a matte blue job. I'd like to change the grip and ejector housing to steel but that's probably out of my budget. A few hundred more rounds of practice and we'll be good. 788 |

788Fan; I don't think the steel ejector rod housing is too expensive at all. Probably around 40 to 50 bucks. Might as well do it & get that & the gun blued at the same time so it all matches. 900F |

Hunting guns don't need to win beauty contests. That being said, I have a lot of respect for that caliber. Being in a Ruger, you could use jacketed bullets and almost get .44 Mag performance. Looks like a great hunting rig, now for the shoulder holster...LOL. New toys always beget new toys.....................Kingpin
