Fella's;

I'm lazy, didn't go on the hunt for exotic ammo like #9 shot.  Therefore, I'm just barely makin' do with #7 & 1/2 shot.  Of course, I've got an old delapidated house with cement board walls too.  Maybe that stuff can hold up against them 7.5's & maybe not, but hell, my neighbors are at least 20 yards away.  It's Outer Montana, and we ain't packed in nearly so tight.

Boy and I thought it was getting crowded around here, my nearest neighbor's a couple hundred yards away.

 A wide pattern of # 9 shot would certainly penetrate eyelids. Pretty damn hard to continue aggression when you can't and probably never again will see.

Read an article the other day that argued that the model 94 winchester was the ideal home defense rifle. Can be loaded up the tube and be ready for action instantly by cranking the lever. No safety to fumble for in the dark. Short, handy, intimidating action noise, can easily replenish magazine during short breaks in action, relatively cheap ammo for practice. Down side is wall penetration and muzzle flash. RD

I keep my 870 loaded to the top with an empty chamber, hammer down just so i don't have to fumble with the safety in the dark...............................Kingpin

When I worked at Garda (Armored Cars) the "Ready Shotguns" were kept ith an empty chamber with the slid released to half-way down, about as "ready" as you can get.

I keep mine loaded to the top with an empty chamber and the hammer down, safety off. In the dark you have only to pick it up and rack the pump and it's loaded. Now, at normal house distances 15 feet and less, with a modified choke, #9 is all BUT a slug when you hit it at the distance I outlined. Another thing, when searching rooms with a shotgun, probably the worse thing you can do is keep it shouldered when entering in stealth mode. It should be choked up with the buttstock tightly under your armpit. If it is sticking out and up to your shoulder, whoever it is may have heard you moving about and is waiting behind the door. When the barrel is seen by him, he can grab it and has enough leverage to take it away from you. Tucked under an armpit and held tightly goes a long way to prevent this up to a point. Fully realizing that not everyone has a short barrel for their shotgun, it is strenuously advised that one does this type of search with the shotgun tucked as short as possible on the presentation end. There's lots of leverage with long barrels. Keep this in mind.............................Kingpin

Kingpin since you brought up keeping your 870 ready with the hammer down on an empty chamber, I've heard conflicting things about dry firing, either it never hurts a modern firearm or it's the worst thing in the world.  Personally, I've never had an problem because of it, have I just been lucky.  What's the expert opinion on it?  I've never had a firing pin spring, lose strength from remaining compressed, nor have I ever had a firing pin break from dry firing, so what's the deal.

About the only centerfire firing pin I have ever broken was on my Model 12 trap gun. Smith and Wesson revolvers are dry fired at the factory about 3000 times through out their assembly. Never dryfire a rimfire, it will but a rather large "dink" on the chamber mouth. As far as all the others, I see no problem...............................Kingpin
