anytime i get a new scope that will be mounted in leupold std bases the first thing i do with the scope is get the x-hairs optically centered. if you are unwrapping a new leupold, that is all you have to do. but, if the scope has been messed with at the shop, or you don't know if it is centered, or whatever, sometimes you have to take an extra step.

so, last night a new sightron came home with me. i get it unboxed and go thru my centering process. i do it one of two ways - either count clicks from stop to stop and get it in the middle, or set the paralax (if so equipped) to infinite and hold the scope against a mirror, and twist knobs until the two images are in alignment.

i recently went thru the same exercise on an old leupold m-8 4x. i noticed an interesting event with the sightron. after i had the images adjusted to each other, i put the caps back on the scope, and double checked my work. the images were no longer in alignment. so i repeated the process, and checked again, and still, no alignment.

next time, i pulled the caps, adjusted everything, and then put pressure on the turret area and noticed the alignment would shift with finger pressure on the turret area.

now, it finally was explained why sometimes i get a scope set perfectly to my zero, then screw the caps on, go home, and next time to the range the zero has magically shifted.

anyway, i thought it was interesting, and offer it as an explanation as to why sometimes are a little different than you thought.

Hunting is not a matter of life or death; it is much more important than that.

I only have one set of Leupold adj bases. I don't remember doing that procedure but it's been a 6-7 years since I installed them.

Somebody once told me not to over tighten the caps cause it could place a "load" on the cross hairs. Since then I just put them on lightly, not tight. After typing this I got up and checked about 8 different scopes and none were lose. I could see that problem causing a lot of grief.

Endeavor to persevere.
