It's time for a new .22.  Ideally it'll be something that comes close to the size and weight of the other bolt guns in the safe, right now all Remingtons.  What do you guys think?  Ruger 77/22, an old Remington 541T if I could find one, one of the CZs?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks,  788

I think the CZ 452 American is a good choice.  Mine feels like a "big" rifle and is well made with nice wood (not fancy).

To get the feel of a CF you really need to get a heavy barrel.  The action on the RF bolt guns are just to light to balance like a CF.

I got a Savage Mark with a heavy barrel and it feels pretty good.

I ruled out the Cooper/Kimber/anshutz as not in the price range you/I would be looking.

I'd check the CZ's also.  They feel like a real gun, kinda remind me of a Winchester model 70, 'cept for the triggerguard.

I have a remington pump 22 rf and it is a gret carrying gun and works good on tree rats.  Been thinking of taking it to the gopher shoot?

The Marlin lever is nice and under apprecited modle 39.  I see them at gun shows cheap.  My bro  has one and it is fine, accurate  and it takes down easy!

 Hey IBD  Maybe you can tell me something since you own on. I've been reading alot about how if you don't hold them level and really work the lever fast they jam. Not good for what I'm looking for,I want a tree rat gun,so if I need a 2nd shot it probaly won't be level.

m39 around here go for 250-350 depending upon condition.  For a forged steel receiver and decent american walnut stock, I think that is cheap today.

Bear;

There are a lot of folks that want a good used model 39, no rebound hammer & safety, that think $350.00 is a steal!  Go over to Thehighroad.org & check out "The Marlin 39 Club" thread.  There's over 100 pages &2500 replies on the thread.  That's pretty much got to be the most comprehensive body of model 39 information going these days.

Better steal one while you can, prices are headed nowhere but UP.

If you are looking at the 541T it's a good choice, but why not go whole hog and get a 541S. It's not currently made, but used ones are available sometimes. The CZ is another good choice, though when I was in the market for a .22 a few years back, I bought a Finfire..........................Kingpin

If you want a 22 that handles like a full size rifle find an old Savage NRA 19. About as full size as you can get and very accurate besides. Barrel is a little heavy for poking through a squirrel woods but we tell SWMBO that were out there for the exercize anyway, right? Paid $225 for mine at a gun show. Mine is free floated w/o the barrel band. RD

tikka.......I don't know why anyone would say they ain't good for "not level" shots......I have never experianced that with mine nor any other lever gun I use......they are hefty tho not unlike the M39 Marlins so maybe IF the shooter is a runt with weak arms it might be a problem for 'him"....maybe......what effect could/would the less then level have on any gun let alone the Henry Yellowboy?  It is best for accuracy when shooting long range with any gun to keep it from not "tilting" to one side or the other ie keep it level but it don't affect the action none and it won't JAM or malfunction less you short stroke it same as any other lever action.  So maybe the guys who shoot fast but not on the level are short stroking their gun......hee,hee, you know...."this is my rifle.....this is my gun"....."short stroking their"......aw well it's late.....

Top is .22 LR bottom is  7-08. Top weighs at least a pound more and would produce more heirloom fruit in your garden.

Stra\ngely enough, this guy doesn't drink and it makes me mad. He owns several Star progressive presses too. He squirrels stuff away on a daily basis. I would wager that he probably has several hundred thousand primers put back. All I can say is, that the guy hoards great stuff. What's moe, he doesn't live very far from Bear................................Kingpin

So what I wound up with is a Ruger 77/22.  Based on the serial number and the 10/22 knock-off barrel it's a 1984 gun, first year of manufacture.  I did put the extended mag release and the Volquartsen trigger kit in it.  Benched and bagged, it'll put 5 shots in one hole at 50 yards with Federal Gold Medal.  CCI Mini-Mag hollows print a bit higher and wider but are still usable.  I stuck at Leupold 3X9X40 on it.  A bit too much scope but not unwieldy.  Should do just fine for a squirrel gun.  Have a good season gang, 788.
