so we start at to some bma land just north of chinook. as we drove there we happened upon to deer in huntable land. so we got signed in and drove down a ways so the deer folk (2 does) couldnt see us. my brother mike and i made our way up a hill and into a ditch. we walked along in the ditch and see these tow good-lookin does. unfurtounitly the sun was in our eyes. so we went though the ditch the other way so the sun was behind us. we saw the does and got down. next we got up aimed and fired. sadly i missed (but we didn't know this at the time). so we jogged after this bounding creaters and we spotted them up on a hill. i took a second shot and epiclly missed. one doe ran off to who knows were, but the one we thought i hit ran down into a weird vally thing and into a creek bed.  we chased her around for a few minutes and she ended up on a cliff like sturcure. i took a third shot and it went through her spine. mike and i worked our way up to the top of the cliff to finish her but she had crawled down to the bottom of the cliff. we got down to her and saw the position she was in.  sadly i hade to shoot her in the head to finish her off. after that we did what most people do and gutted her out, hung her up and stated our 10 day wait. out of my four deer i have gotten this is only the second that i have had to finish off like that. so 4 shots and about 50 minutes landed us our first deer of the season. pix to follow soon when my dad (tasunkawitko) can post them.

Hey there. Thanks for the story. As for finishing her off.. it's unfortunate that they don't all go bang flop but I guess that's hunting. If it's any help, when I was your age I used to shoot at deer. In fact I shot at deer until I was about 35 years old. I was always a great shot on targets but I missed and wounded a lot of deer. Mel Gibson of all people made me think about how I shot at deer. In The Patriot he taught his boys "aim small, miss small". I now pick out the specific spot I want to hit. I shoot small spots now. I don't chase many deer. (Last one I chased I simply misjudged the range and hit too low. Never did recover it.)   Other things can go wrong but "aim small, miss small" helps a lot. Rockydog

and here are the pix for bill's deer from 7nov09. unfortunately, we had forgotten to take the camera with us, so the pix had to be taken when we got home about an hour later:

and of course after that, the whole family wanted to get in on it...

as bill said, she's now hanging in the shed out at my parents' place, waiting 10 days or so for aging. hide is on and will come off when we skin her and quarter her. two weeks from now, she will be in the freezer.

thaks to all for the comments, i'll let bill know that he's got some replies ~

some details he left out:

date - 7nov09 - mid-morning.

location - north of chinook, montana

rifle: herter's mj9 in .308, topped with Tasco World Class Plus 3-9x44mm scope.

ammunition: 180-grain hornady spire-point sitting on a very accurate load developed by rob1 a few years ago. i have the recipe written down somewhere, but it's not handy at the moment.

for hitting her in the spine, it looks like he might have hit her in probably the best place possible with the bullet he used - right near the base where the loins and the hindquarters meet. the big 180-grain bullet did very little damage, other than to break a section of spine about 2 inches long out this section of bone fell out when we retrienved the tenderloins (intact) and looks almost as if it were cut out rather than blown out. near as i can tell, a person can eat right up to the hole as there was no violent expansion.

Nice pics Bambifever.

Looks like you have some hunting buddies there for the future years.  I still have the pic of my sons first deer (20 years ago) on my den wall.  Actually, I happened to take a look at it yesterday.  Great memories.

Hope to see you post more.

Congratulations

Wingmaster,

I want to look at your avatar and I want to see it enlarged.  My eyes are not what they used to be.
