Ok anybody ever made a knife out of cable? Using the Damascus method. Or if you want to call it "pattern welding". I am looking into starting to make knives as a hobby. I am learning metallurgy in college and this is one thing we are doing. Plus I dig this stuff. If any of you can point me into any good books to read or any pointers it would be appreciated.

Sorry, can't help you in the metallurgy area, but do know Damascus is my weakness and I love blades made in that method. Good luck in your endeavours and hope you succeed in getting the info and skill!

thanks rivet. I do know that the cable method is the starting point for most blacksmith-knife makers that are going to make the authentic Damascus design. Which Damascus method is all about folding the metals in layers then etching the metal with a acid or such liquid. We will be starting this next semester in one of my classes.

I am also looking at making some knives out of railroad spikes. Maybe you will be my best customer later on....lol...I have a long way to go yet

You better believe it GOT1.....make 'em right and I want them! My wife thinks I'm nuts, but I say some people collect butterflies, others collect cars, and still others stamps..... I like edged tools.

Learn to make them well, bud. I'll be glad to buy at least one!

A good tool is perfect!~
