Now I ain't met anyone who hasn't had somethin wierd happen and still bag their game. So I'll share one of my stories, and hopefully after yer done laughing you can post one of yer's.
First time I bow hunted was in the Jan. doe season, durn cold and it was the last day of season. Had a doe come in through some thick brush, now there was about 3 inches of snow on the ground just after sun rise, and I was COLD (-7), so was the bow (PSE Nova) the trees, ... Anywho, she walked fer a bit threw that thick stuff and finally stopped at 30 yards in a spot where I had about a 12 inch window to shoot through. Now I practiced alot so I figuired I could make the shot, but when I tried pullin back the bow I got to about 80% draw and could budge it, I started shakin and straining. Don't know how she didn't see me gruntin, twisting, and turning red getting thet bow drawn to full draw but I got it done before she moved. Finally got my aim settled, and let her fly. Now I hadn't ever shot a deer with an arrow before so I didn't know what to expect. What I saw was terrible, plus it all happened in slow motion. The arrow arched what seemed to be a foot over the deers back, and then made a funny twack sound like it hit a limb and stuck fast into the ground. I watched her trot off, grunted once and stopped her behind a pine tree. I felt sick that I had missed my first real shot at a deer! I watched her there for a couple more seconds and thought I heard another deer so I pulled out another arrow. Nothin, I looked back for the doe but she was gone. I decided I'd wait to get out of the tree stand to check for blood until I heard a pack of yotes howlin about 200 yds in the direction the doe took off. That's when I started to get upset thinkin I could have hurt her and now the coyotes were running her. This was about 20 minutes after the shot, I climbed down and went to look fer the arrow. Now I use carbon arrows and they are completely black except for the fletch. I found it stuck into the ground past where the deer had been. Then I saw some blood, oh crap I hit the thing! Picked up the arrow and it looked funny, hell it had blood on it!, but I didn't look at the type of blood I was to excited. I started following the blood, after about 15 yards I was about 20 paces from the pine tree she had stood behind. That's when it hit me, I walked around that tree and there she was, when I grunted she stopped and had never taken another step. It was a nice lung shot, the arrow had arc'd due to the distance not my error. I look at the arrow and saw the bubbles in the blood and thought about what a green horn I am.
