Basically I just took out the "Gas gage" and replaced it with the Flow Meter gage. Cut the fuel line after the filter and spliced it in. Hope it works... under the hood I had lots of room to work in back . |

My brother has a 30 foot Grady white with twin 250 yamahas. they both have flow and tank fuel gages. Last year we took a 1200 mile trip in his boat and I spend a few days at the helm. I did find the digital fuel consumption guages interesting. But I don't think I'd have swapped out that tank fuel guage??? Can you get a second guage (or take your old tank fuel guage) and mount it near the motor? I sort of like to know how much gas is left in the tank, if only to know when I have half and can make it back to my starting point? BEAR |

Actually his meters work on the tach output and calculate miles/gallon. Does the Northstar give you the gallons/minute? BEAR |

Thats why I took out the old gage, it would tell you if you had gas a indicator light will do the same. You could never know how much is left, the attitude of the boat will give you a false reading. The flow meter keeps track of how much have taken out of the tank, how mush your using at any RPM,how much you have left in the tank ( if you program how much you started with )and has a memory and will keep track if you ad more gas on your trip up to 999 gallons.

Sounds great. Those tank guages are really pretty poor. I like knowing how much is left, by it sutracting the use from the full amount. Like car guages the second half always seems to go faster? And as you say the guage shows a different amount when you come off plane.
Sounds like you will be ready for spring. BEAr |

As soon as the morning ice comes off the boat ramp I'm going to dunk the boat in and try to set the system. I have to set the units to US Gallons and punch in how many gallons I start with then give it a try . I will then go and refill to check how accurate it is .

Looking at it and doing some quick math: 30 mph= .17 gal per mile = 5.9 miles per gallon 35 mph= .22 "   ; = 4.5 38 mph= .27 "   ; = 3.7 44 mph= .26 "   ;= 3.8
All of these are pretty respectable. but clearly the 30 mph is your best. Wonder what it wouldbe if you got it up on plane and then backed it off a little (called "on the step") it will still be on plane? This is usually the best mpg position on bots. Mine is a 200 hp v-6 4 stroke and the boat is about 5200# 23 foot, with a 8.8 foot beam. My best mileage is right at 3100 rpm, unless it is real choppy then it needs 3300 rpm to hold a steady speed on the bounce. Looks like you got your self a fun toy for this season. Remember the GPS is and average speed/distance and is made up of a series of straight lines not the curve you travel.

On my big boat run last year we ran at 38 mph for many hours and I figured it coast me $.01 per second of running. It takes 21 mph to get it to plain and it will come off at 18 mph. I didn't take a pic of it at this speed, I was by my self and just the movement of my fat A$$ will make it come down of plain in that range. I like to run it at around 30/32 mph , that is where it's the quietest and smoothest. At 5500 to 6000 it roars and sucks gas but it's fun to blow by all the Malabo's and Mamba's. Edited by d4570 |

I wish I could, there is no trim. I would use it on some of the outfitters that throw eggs at me when I'm in "THERE" waters!! |
