gentlemen -

i was informed at 1430 this afternoon that my grandmother, betty mae (stoner) opfer of canon city, colorado, had passed away about a month after her 80th birthday.

she was a successful woman and lived an interesting life, but the last few years were very bad. she suffered alzheimer's, lost a daughter a couple of years ago, had to let go of a cherished home and a properous business, and was confined to the lonely halls of a nursing home with her other daughter (my mother) a thousand miles away. very recently, she suffered a stroke, and from there she pretty much just faded away.

i would appreciate your thoughts and prayers for her and for my mother, who is not taking this well. in the past couple of years, she has lost a sister and now her mother. her grandmother, a great lady of 102 years of age, was very recently diagnosed with cancer, and of course at her age there will be no treatment. this is the last of my mother's family, except for us kids of course, and a few of her cousins.

we are only on this earth for a limited number of years, and when we are gone, the only thing that matters is the lives we leave behind. to those of you whom i count as friends, i am grateful; to those of you i don't know so well, i hope that your day is going a lot better than mine.

here's a picture of me, my sister and my grandmother in 1977, when my birthday happened to fall on the same day as easter.

Betty Mae Opfer, 80, passed away June 10th, 2008 in Cañon City, Colorado.

Betty was born in Blend, Colorado on May 21st, 1928 to Joseph Warren and Rose Ethel (Stanton) Stoner. She grew up in Cotopaxi and Cañon City and graduated from Cañon City High School in 1946. Betty married Harlan “Pete” Bohl on October 5th, 1946. From this union came two daughters, Sandra Joy and Sharyl Rose.

The day after Thanksgiving in 1965, Betty married Harvey E. Opfer. She worked various jobs throughout her life until she and Harvey opened Opfer’s Shoes-N-Things in 1970.  Betty’s life revolved around Shoes-N-Things and she took great pride in the store and in her work there. Betty most enjoyed her business at the store because it gave her the opportunity to visit with her many customers who became cherished friends. She was also a member of the Cañon City Chamber of Commerce and Zonta. Betty retired from the store upon its sale in 2004. Over the years, Betty and Harvey traveled extensively together; one of their most memorable trips was their last trip together, a cruise around the Hawaiian Islands.

Betty is survived by her husband, Harvey E. Opfer of Cañon City; daughter Sharyl (Roger) Fischer of Chinook, MT; step-children Janet (Barney) Flick of Westcliffe, CO, Neldon Opfer of Buena Vista, CO; Ann Miller of Bon Carbo, CO and Terry (Winny) Opfer of Cañon City; grandchildren; Ronald (Melissa) Fischer of Chinook, MT and  Angie (Mark) Kralich of Havre, MT; step-grandchildren Eddie Flick, Patrick Flick, Mike Opfer, Chris Opfer, Virgil Miller, Elizabeth and Tazz Opfer; great-grandchildren Josef, Micheal, William, and Roger Fischer all of Chinook, MT and Hallie Kralich of Havre, MT; step-great-grandchildren Shelby Flick and Katara Opfer and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Rose Stoner; daughter Sandra Travis; brothers Joseph W. Stoner, Jr. and Robert Stoner; sisters Dorothy McCrory and Florence “Mollie” Sparks; grandson Baby Jayson and niece Carol LeBlanc.

Betty will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Memorial services will be at First Christian Church at 1:30 p.m. on June 17th, 2008; internment will be held at Lakeside Cemetery. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church in Cañon City, The Alzheimer’s Association or The Unit at Hildebrand Care Center in Cañon City. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Charles Anthony Funeral Home in Florence.

again, thanks to all ~

due to cvarious complications, i will not be able to travel to colorado to attend my grandmother's funeral; hwoever, her apstor asked me to write a few words, memories etc. - here they are -

------------------------------------------------------------ ------

Memories of My Grandmother

Since I was privileged enough to have her in my life for well over 30 years, I naturally have many, many memories of my grandmother going back to my earliest childhood. When I was young, we would go to Cañon City probably once a year to visit, and she would come up to Montana almost as often to see us. Later, when I had a family of my own and was living in Spearfish, South Dakota or Lewistown, Montana, she would take the time now and then to come and visit for a few days, knowing that a trip to Colorado would be difficult for us. Throughout those years of memories and recollections, two definite impressions remain.

This first is that she was a woman who had worked hard throughout her life and had overcome many various adversities. Being a child, I had no idea of these adversities or their complex nature, but it didn’t matter. Instinctively, I knew that my grandmother was someone who not only knew the value of hard work and sacrifice, but also knew the rewards that come with those trials; rewards such as happiness, success, appreciation for the real joys in life and the faith that no matter how challenging life can be, it could always be worse and most likely will get better.

The second impression that I always will remember is her generosity with those she loved and her desire to make them happy. All of my most vivid memories of my grandmother involve her doing something for my family and me and sharing the fruits of her hard work with us. She would listen with attention and interest while I would tell her about whatever I was interested in at the time, and she would take my sister and me to places we might not have otherwise seen so that we could do things we might not otherwise have done. As a child, I was simply glad to be having a good time; it wasn’t, of course, until I was older that I realized the lesson there, that success is worthless without loved ones to share it with and a generation that benefits from it.

The ultimate insult to God would be to not make the most of our time here on earth; to let ridiculous, petty things keep us from enjoying what we do have. In spite of the challenges that my grandmother faced in life and the hard work that was necessary for her to realize her goals, my impression is that she was truly able to find the happy balances that many of us deny ourselves. In reviewing my memories of her, I can always see a smile on her face or a positive attitude toward the situation at hand, and that is something not easily forgotten. If I can leave even a fraction of this impression on my own succeeding generations, then my life, regardless of its ending, will be considered a success. She showed me through her words and actions that nothing is more important than her family and loved ones, and it is my intention to honor her time on earth – and her memory – by endeavoring to follow her example in my own life.
