Area--Kigosi area east of Moyowosi, in western Tanzania

PH-Dean Kendell

Rifle-A-bolt 375H&H, 300 gr Remington w/A-frames; 458 winMag w/500gr sledgehammer solids

Game taken: Leopard, buffalox3, Topix2, sable, baboon, bushbuck, waterbuck.

Game seen but not taken--hippo, elephant, hartebeest, reedbuck, lionesses

Most fun--slipping into the lion or leopard blinds early in the morning, pitch black, and either hippos grunting close by on each side, or lions and hyenas fighting within the immediate  50 yd area.

Great pics.  Nice boss on the buff.  Looks like you did it all.  Was the leopard a night hunt over bait?

Bear, No night hunts allowed in Tanzania. We would sit in the blind for the last 2 hours of daylight, then return at 4 am to await sun-rise.

The bait that had the leopard on it was about 20 miles from camp. We would drive to about 1/2 mile of the bait, then follow a trail we had marked with bits of tissue-paper to get to the blind. We had seen a big Mamba the previous evening on that trail, as well as fresh tracks of 3 lions. That morning, in the pitch black, we could hear hippos grunting on both sides of the trail, as we were only about 50 yds from the Kigosi river. We got to the blind very quietly. After several minutes there was just enough light to see that something was making the bait hanging in the tree to move a bit. Looking thru my scope, I finally got just a glimpse of a big leopard standing on its back legs, feeding. After another few seconds, I looked thru the scope and could see the outiline of the leopard, with the crosshairs behind his shoulder. I squeezed off.

We waited about 10 minutes as the boys drove the truck up, had a smoke, and finally it was light enough to followup on the leopard. He had gone thru the thickest stuff, and the lead tracker had actually walked a foot past where he was layin before seeing him. He had expired about 50 yds from where he had been shot.

There are 3 different buffalo pictured.  That area of Tanz is a 3 buff area on a 21 day hunt.

The fellows with their handcuffs were poachers, caught by the anti-poaching unit.  They had come in on a bicycle, with a muzzle-loader, and had killed a buffalo. They were doubtless hoping for an elephant with some ivory.

The lioness pictured in the "over-the-shoulder' pict was a young lioness who liked a particuliar termite mound on which to lie and watch for game. We managed to get quite close for that photo.

Also got a decent Defassa Waterbuck:

Great pic of the "over the shoulder cat", and you.

I notice that you can tell when the pictures were taken, by the wear and tired look on your face.

I did one 21 day Safari, with another 5 days of travel in and out.  Pictures of me when I got to home airport were not recognizable.  I was hunting leopards from 6pm to 3 am; sleeping for 5 hours; then shooting baits for leopards while trophy hunting till 5 pm.  No sleeping in the night blinds.

But it was a great time.  I'm sure you were the same.

Again I like the boss on that one old duggar boy.  Great memories, thanks for posting.
