Not anymore Mule, for some reason the military started to encourage it's members not to smoke - the newer vehicles don't have lighter sockets. That being said, I've seen some pretty ingenious additions of sockets into said vehicles - not leagle, mind you. oh, and the vehicles tend to run higher VDC systems than normal vehicles. I'm not a ground mech. so I'm not sure what the electrics are, but the helos run 28 VDC / 115 VAC @ 400 Hz. |

Sounds like some electrical wire and fans would be the way to go. Sorry to say that I'd be against anything air-conditioner like. Too rough on the conditioning of a soldier to sleep in 72 degree barracks and then go outside all day in 130 degree temp's. Plus there's the additional concern about powering such an A/C device. Fans are easy and I've seen them in HMMVs, Abrams and APC's during my stint with Uncle Sam. So long as some hardass commander or motor pool NCO doesn't raise hell, small clip fans can be downright 5-Star accomodations for a field grunt. Sure beats the heck out of sleeping in the open on a poncho! Just some thoughts. I still think we oughtta get word from those who are there and what they request before proceeding.

On top of it, as usual, tas. Hey mountain, I uderstand you line of thought with the air conditioning, but considr this... weather they're (Soldiers) are sleeping in tents or C.H.U.'s (Mini three room trailers - each room having it's own outside door & sealed from the other rooms), they have airconditioning. Because of the heat, even at a conditioners lowest setting inside temp is 80-85 deg. F. Still a severe temp difference, yes, but not hypothermic. I don't know how you did it in the '50's, I can't sleep for shit when the power's out - something about laying in a puddle of sweat after ten minutes just curdles my stomach. |

Hey fellas.I am off for a few hours and figured I would catch up on my internet time some.I am living in a mobile home deal that has three seperate rooms.I share a room with another guy a Corporal who is squared away and not a pig.It isn`t too bad.We have a window unit ac that keeps it cool in here and I have a tv that gets 9 channels of afn cable.I have a coffee pot and workin on gettin a small fridge.
Outside though it is still hot and in a HMMWV even with ac on its farking hot, especially for the driver. Our ac doesn`t work worth a shit in our HMMWV anyways but at least as the gunner I can get some air/wind while we`re rolling. Garou is right, imagine the hottest day you`ve ever seen back home, then a 40 mile an hour wind blowing and add 20 degrees to it.Thats what it is like.I have gotten half assed used to it but it is still a bitch with body armor on.Armor makes it nasty and keeps the sweat locked in between your clothes and the armor. Anyways, glad to be able to talk to you guys again. gene |

Hey Gene, Sorry we didn't link up yeasterday, maybe if there's a little more fore warning I can plan to take the next day off (I.E. stay up later). BTW, I understand 'bout no warning - OPSEC & all. As for your fridge, the PX here has a few 220V LG minni fridges. The kind you'd find in a hotel room or under a counter. If you'll get me a DHL or FED EX addy for you, I'll pick one up & send it to ya. I have one - works great - and CB knows what kind of lock works in it (Put one on mine). I can get a case of Monsters, a case of Starbucks DoubleShot, a 12pk of starbucks frappacino's, and a 12 pack of soda in mine with a little room left over. Let me know. G. |

to all -
we finally got all items in place, boxed up and ready to ship. here's what part of your donations have bought gene: a) a pair of kick-ass steiner binocs for use on missions b) two binocualr harnesses designed to take the weight off his neck c) the field manual: instructions for US servicemen in iraq d) the COIN (counterinsurgency) field manual e) a pretty wide assortment of several varieties of good coffees (i told gene to try them all, trade or give away what he doesn't like (might make him popular with the locals), and let us know what he does like - we'll get more for him). f) a coffee grinder g) a shitload of corn bread mix (another guy on another site is sending him a shitload of chili fixin's, so it seemed like a good idea to get him some corn bread!) h) a shitload of hard candies for gene and his guys and for handing out to the kids they see. in addition, a member of another site has donated a combat knife that he had made (www.rangerknives.com), and there have also been separate donations of an additional 5 lbs. of damn good coffee, a case of oatmeal (assorted flavors) and a case of hot chocolate mix. finally, my mother, sister, wife and youngest son have donated a veritable shitload of small beanie-baby style stuffed animals and toys. i used this as packaging material and also so gene could hand them out to local kids. we've still got a good chunk of money left. since this money was raised for gene by friends of gene, i propose that the money be used for one or a combination of these purposes: a) a package to be sent during the 2nd half of his tour. b) a donation to a soldier-related charity in his name. c) send it to his wife and three kids to help defray any expenses they might have. the issue of shipping has now cropped up. we managed to pack all of this in a long box that is approximately 12x18x30 inches. i don't know for sure about the weight, but i wouldn't be surprised if it were about 35 lbs. any options for shipping, or is USPS going to be just about all there is? garou, If you can introduce a water mist onto the cooling fins of your AC you might be able to reduce your room temperature a bit more while saving on electricity. It might be worth the effort. Try it and let us know if it is worth the effort to do the misting. It is something that you ought to be able to feel right away. If you had access to a thermometer you could measure the change in the ac air temperature recirculating in your hooch immediately. You could use a hand pump pressure sprayer for the test. If this seems worthwhile there are commercial air misting kits available here that readily fit any AC. I don't know about GI ACs though. This might be something the higher-ups might be interested in? FYI.... "AC Mister combines a number of features in such a way as to make it possible for customers to be able to improve the efficiency of their current air conditioner with a very simple installation. AC Mister will also reduce the power consumption of current air conditioners, both window and central types. http://www.acmister.com/products/

Tas. After reading the thread I had a thought (doesn't happen often) alot of the police supplies around here sell a T-Shirt that goes on under the armor that has cloth ribs running verticial on the shirt. They work well in keeping the armor directly off of you and allows a little ventilation so that it keeps you a tad cooler. I can find out how much they are now and we can see about getting them in the right color as well. Just let me know, this may be a good second care package item. Take care Be safe Poacher. |

900f - i'll check and see if DHL runs out of havre. i
haven't seen any of the yellow trucks up here, but on the other hand, i haven't been looking for them. we've got money for the shipping, no problem, but it would be nice to save a bit on the costs. poacher - that sounds like a pretty good idea. if you could look into that, we should see if we can get two of them, so that he can have one for "laundry day...." we're going to have around 300$ left after shipping (maybe more) and i imagine we could get a good package together with that. |

alright, guys -
over my lunch hour i went to the USPS and got this box on its way to gene. i filled out the customs form and requested insurance in the amount of 850$, which should cover everything (at least the critical stuff). on the advice of a member from another forum, i listed the base commander as an alternate recipient in case gene was "out there somewhere" or otherwise temporarily unavailable when it arrives. i also specified priority mail since "parcel post" packages might sit there for quite a while before they make it on the plane. the final weight of the package was much more than i thought it would be (50 lbs., 14 oz.) but the final shipping cost, including priority and insurance, was quite a bit less than i thought it would be (66.95$), so i guess things evened out pretty well. they said that 10 days is a "normal" amount of time to allow for shipping; i told them that i will start worrying after a fortnight. when i have free time, i will tally up the remaining funds and we can make a determination of what to do with them. a quick look at the numbers indicates that we should have a little over 400$ left. poacher has given a very good suggestion for the beginnings of a second package, and i am sure that before too long we will be able to come up with more. two other alternate courses for the funds are also suggested above, so we can surely come up with a plan. i'd like to congratulate and thank each and every person who contributed in any way to the successful completion of this project. were it up to any one of us alone, this endeavour would most likely have been out of reach for many reasons. by pooling our resources, knowledge and experience, we were able to make this thing work, and i can say, without controversy, "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!" |

TasunkaWitko Does TimberGhozt have family (wife, son, daughter) here in the States? I have been sponsoring a service member’s family (a buddy of mine’s son) to help with incidental expenses. It is really tough on the families left behind. Maybe some funds towards this side of the equation may be beneficial. Even though I am a little late in the mix, I am more than happy to assist. Let me know what I can do. Doc Edited by Doc Garrett |

Rick, I am a doctor of the PhD variety. I am a microbiologist running a research lab for a large pharm/chem company in the South. Getting to the point of retirement so that I can spend more time hunting, fishing, and pissing off liberals. Knowing what a sacrifice our military families are making for this country, a little check now and then is our way of saying thanks. We have several in the military at work and fortunately our company provides support for their family members. Anytime an unforseen expense arises, we pass the hat. It sure beats seeing tax dollars wasted and we know our contribution goes directly to those in need. Doc |

Howdy all, My laptop's power supply shit itself, so I had to borrow one for a minute... Sam - Good Idea, and yes it works. We have some big ass mobile swamp coolers we use to cool the areas around the aircraft in the hangar - 6'x6' cardbaord drip area with a 4' diameter fan pulling air through the "waterfall". There is a water reservior at the bottom we fill every couple of hours. A pump pushes the water through piping to a PVC tube with holes drilled in it. The water flows down the cardboard and cools the airflow. It make a hugely noticable difference in temperature. They are called a "Port-A-Cool". Poacher - I can't recall the manufacture of the vest, but Brigade Quartermasters sells 'em. If memory serves they run somewhere in the 20-30$ range. They also make a liner for the PSGT and ACG helmets. All three types are sold at the PX's here. I never bothered with one because I didn't wear the armor for any great length of time all that often. And I figured it would be more of a pain in my ass getting into and out of than the armor vest already was. But that's a personal choice/opinion. They gave me a vest for this trip too, but I have yet to wear it. In fact the last time I saw it was when we had to move 140 guys into 8 tents from the 13 we had originally. As for wether or not it works - couldn't say, haven't tried or run accross someone who has. |

Have you sen a "Ballistic Gauntlet"? It lines the Humv. Floor/seat etc ? Seem to reduce IED damage in non-armor vehicles. BEAR |
