yes! here they are considered a pest, I intend to shoot one with my .204 first oppertunity! I've killed em with a shotgun, my boy dropped one during dove season! was using a 20ga mod. choke 71/2 shot and hit it at about 75yds! folded like a broken kite! I couldn't believe it, was way out of range but did the job just the same

Ravens and crows should be targets, as they play hell on other bird eggs, and even baby birds.
I believe there is some sort of treaty with Mexico, that we aren't supposed to shoot them. And, I intend to abide by that regulation, as soon as illegal immigrants cease coming over the Mexico border. Sound fair?

Waks;

I thought it was the Magpie, Mexico's National Bird, that was protected by that treaty.  We signed it in order get them to agree to quit killing eagles.  The Mexican's are, of course, honoring the treaty at all times.  Every single one of them ya know.

Now then, on to the technical discussion of the definition of B.S.

I think the American crow is protected through the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, but has been amended to allow hunting at the State's discretion, but under Federal rules.  I do not think crow hunting is permitted in Montana.  I think ravens are under full protection from the MBTA.

CB, I hadn't heard about the eagle and magpie agreement.  Do you have some info. on this?

One hit and one miss so far this spring. It's always so windy this time of
year. Both shots between 100-125yds with the Ruger 96-22mag. We have a
farm about 7 miles from here that has a gaggle of about 300 of them. I don't
know why they always hand out there but he doesn't let people hunt there.
I've been scouting for my brown crow with the white spot under his wing but
haven't seen him yet this year. I think he must be 8-9 years old by now.
Anybody know how old they get?

I have a particular hatred of crows as they love to take the eyes and tongues of lambs as they are born.So I do take every opportunity to lessen their numbers.

Have a good one,

Out here in Alberta crows, ravens, and magpies are open season all year round. They are pests and nasty nest raiders. I regularily whack em with my 204. In the winter I dump a bag of cheap dog food about 270 yds from the house on a fence line. This is my entertainment during those cold Alberta winters. I open the window upstairs from my wifes craft room and send a 39 gr blitz king and giggle when I see the puff of feathers at impact through the scope. Longest shot to date was 470 yds on a raven.

MtMiller;

I think the eagle/magpie thing was part of the NAFTA agreement.  Not sure, would have to do some research.

We don't have crows but we do have ravens. We are our 4th pair since we moved here 24 years ago. They take all the handouts I put on the lower roof, and come when I call them. The first shedding of the horses leaves a huge pile from my brushes and they can get a HUGE amount in their mouths to line their nests. The babies are fluffy and appear larger than the parents when they finally fly. They usually have two, sometimes 3. When the parents want to finally get shed of them, they bring them to the front porch where they open their mouths and beg when I walk by. This is time to put out the mouse traps so I have a treat for them. Dang smart these birds.

Wisconsin has a crow hunting season & the regs stipulate that you have to eat your kill ie eat crow.  The treaty with Mexico dates back to the 1970's or earlier.  The crow is in a species/family that is listed in the agreement.  Game Warden told us back then can't shoot crows UNLESS they look like they is aboot to do damage to crops......and he told us he never knew of a crow that warn't aboot to do crop damage........Don't know why there is a season on them now......don't know if the treaty is still in effect........haven't shot a crow in years......used to pop 'em with a 22-250 or sometimes over decoys with shotguns.....

The University of Tennessee Ag Extension Service did publish a cookbook with nothing but crow recipes in the past.  Probably ok eating, but think it will stay on the list of things never eaten in my life.

1st yes I love to shoot crows when I see them I hate the noisy basturds. Not sure of the legality of it, but thats my bad.

2nd When I was in the 8th grade around 77-78 the Idaho fish and game passed a law stateing it was no longer legal to shoot magpies. When we asked my dads best friends wife who worked for them at the time. She said the reason was that NEW MEXICO had made it thier state bird. Idaho's official reason for the law change. NOW GET THIS. They said they are a song bird Someone really thought that through didn't they.
