I went to the store with my 20% off certificate and looked at a bunch of stuff. I could only get 10% off firearms, I looked hard at a grey laminated ss TIKKA in 300 win, but I need a scope or two already, before I get another rifle. I was disaponited that the only low power range scope they stock is a VX1 leupold 2X7. I guess most guys want the really high power range stuff these days. So I almost got a VX2 3X9 nothing more versital than that, But instead I bought a nikkon Buckmaster 4.5X14 with side focus. With 20% off it came to only 231.00. Not a bad price at all ! I am about to mount it on my custom 25,06. My didgi cam died on me but if I am smart enough to figure it out, I might take a pic with my cell phone, E-mail it to myself and If can pull it off, post a picture. And right after I get that right I will do brain surgery , with a socket set ! ...tj3006 |

Brain surgery with a socket set? Having done this several times in the past, I highly recommend that you use the quarter inch drive set and make sure that you have some long extension to reach deep down there. Now, I saw a Nikon 3X9 scope last month and was impressed with the light gathering. Actually, impressed was an understatement. The image was very clear too. That being said, I plan to try one just to see for myself. I have always maintained that all currently manufactured scopes are optically perfect. The main difference is, some will take more rough use and abuse that the majority of the others. I plan to buy mine to use as I use my Premier Reticle Leupolds and to check the longevity of it. The one I saw was very, very nice. I hope it performs like that the next time I see it. Congrats on the scope choice, keep us posted about it everytime you use it. On the .25-06 it should last quite a while....................Kingpin

Fella's; From my personal experience, I find the Nikon Monarch's to be extremely good glass. The Nikon Buckmaster I've got is better than the Burris it replaced, but it's not really any better than average. The Monarch is a 3.3-10X A/O mil-dot & the Buckmaster is a 6-18X SAO FCH. It's a case of getting what you pay for. 900F |

I Picked the Buck master cause I liked the side focus. My preference is for leupolds as you guys know. I looked at a 4X12 VX 1 but i just don't want to reach way out to the end of the scope to bring it into focus. The 25,06 i mounted it on is a custom, 26 inch douglass barrel on a MK10 action in a nutmeg laminated thumbhole Boyds stock. I had a hard time getting it to shoot at 1st it only like the 117 grain sierra, but I discoverd it prefers medium powders like RL-19 and IMR-4350, to the really slow stuff I tried 1st. RL-25 and 22 IMR-7828 H-1000. MY hope is to get loads with several bullets from 100Gr up. A 100 grain tripple shock at 3400 FPS would be great if I can get it to group. A 115 at 3150 or a 120 grain Partiton would be the ultimate killing bueets if I wanted to push the cartrige to really big deer or even caribu(if i ever get to hunt them). But for mule deer and antilope With that nikkon I should be able to make some really long shots on whatever...tj3006 |

Tj, Shoot the best accuracy load for your future caribou hunt. They can be at some pretty long range, and as always accurate bullet placement counts high. Caribou are very easy to kill, a 243 with 100 grainers works fine (and I don't like the 243 for even deer). I understand your interest in the side focus, and am also a Leupold fan. Hope you have better luck than I had with Nikon rifle scopes.....I always liked their cameras. Need a pic of the whole rig. BEAR |
