The last pic is of the field where she took the buck She was sitting behind a cedar tree that is just out of the pic to the left, the buck was grazing just to the left of the clump of trees in the center, just inside the wheat field. the shot was 122 paces (my pace count is 72 for 100 meters) the little .243 bullet entered just under the spine on the left side took the top of the heart out and exited mid ribcage on the right side and he dropped like he had been hit by the hammer of Thor.

BPN.... I'm interested in the camping setup. I'd like to do a similar thing next fall at the beginnjing of our deer season. It is up a steep mountain, [for Maine] about a 1500 foot climb. We may be able to use an ATV if we are careful of the steepness. 45 -50 degree slope. The temps will be in the 20s - 30s night time[could go lower] and 40s - 50s in the daytime. I've been thinking of spending a few weekends and putting together a plywood shelter, piece by piece...but your tent looks very suitable. I'd like to go up and stay by myself for 2-3 days at a time. I'd have to stockpile water and perhaps the provisions ahead of time and make the actual hunting excursion just a walk-in trek. I've never one this before and this is probably as close to spending a year in the Alaskan wilds as I'm ever going to get. What are your thoughts on a tent vs a plywood shelter? Stockpiling provisions? What about using freeze-dried meals? MREs?

Be careful what you decide to not like. Your wife may wear one. Your son may ride one. Your daughter may bring one home. You may have to have one someday. |

Samchap, My tent is a 5 man arctic hex (milsurp) tent alone w/liner,stakes,and pole weighs about 85 pounds, the stove w/pipe weighs 67 pounds. Aside from the weight issue the my setup will keep you nice and toasty, our lows this last 2 days were in the teens, and I kept it warm enough to sleep under a single wool blanket with longhandles and socks on. The wife and I are considering getting one of those coleman mr buddy propane heaters so that instead of one of us having to stay up and tend the fire (needs stoked and refueled every couple of hours). As far as a plywood structure goes if it is double walled with an air gap it shouldnt be too bad.

Samchap; Depending on your situation, a double wall tent may work best for you. Having a foot of dead air between the outer & inner tent works wonders. However, you're looking at considerable bulk and weight. 900F |

I think a 1/4 inch plywood and a glued on PIP board on the inside would be as warm as any primitive log cabin. BEAR |
