I just purchased some .50 cal ammo because I'm gong to a picnic and someone is bringing a .50 cal rifle for us to shoot. [Plus a bunch of  class lll weapons....with proper FFL]

It is remanufactured ammo by the talon Ammo Co, 662 grain bullet, muzzle velocity of 2,910 F.P.S........and a "listed" muzzle energy of 2,446 ft.lbs.

That seemed low to me so I looked up this:

300 Win.® Mag 180 PSP Core-Lokt® 2,960 3,501

180 grain, mv-2,960, me-3,501

Something seems to be calculated incorrectly here. The .50 cal should have a lot more ME than that listed.....or am I just thick headed?

OK Sam,

I'm in New York, on my second Chopin, Up- shaken not stirred.

In my condition the post is for a 300 mag not a 50BMG?????

It could be my eyes??

660 grain at 2900 fps should have about 12,700 ft.lbs.  ME

could the box be missing an initial numeral  "1" and meant to read "12,446".

That energy calculation used most of the available cocktail napkins...I'll need to get the sexy cocktail waitress to get me another drink.

The number 2,446 doesn't even match the metric equavalent???

I think the box lost meaning in translation to English.

Bear,

It's the ME of the .50 cal that seems low to me as compared to the .300 Winchester. Look at the MVs the bullet grainage and the resulting MEs.

Samchap;

Hornady agrees with you, somethin's rotten in Denmark, or at least in the numbers given to you for the .50 energy.  Now Hornady 6th does not list the fifty as such, but here's some interesting data:

.45 Caliber, 500 grain bullet, muzzle velocity 2600 fps = muzzle energy of 7504 ft lbs!  Exclamation point is mine.

I'm thinkin' that assuming Hornady's numbers are correct, the .50 with a 162 grain heavier bullet exiting the muzzle at 310 more fps, should produce substantially more energy than the .45.  I'm outright guessing, but 30 percent more.

OK, figured this another way from Speer 13.  Given that the .50 bullet has a B/C of .46, and it's almost certainly higher, the Speer formula for a muzzle velocity of a flat 2900 fps gives an energy of 12,360 ft. lbs.

I got the info from The Sportsmans Guide web site, stock # wx2 - 0072597.

  • Never fired brass
  • Non-corrosive
  • Boxer-primed
  • Fully reloadable
  • 662 grain
  • M33 Full Metal Jacket bullet
  • 150 loose rounds
  • Muzzle Velocity: 2,910 F.P.S.
  • Muzzle Energy: 2,446 ft.-lbs.
  • Comes in O.D. metal .50 cal. Can with top and side handles (6 x 12 x 7 1/2").

It does seem that they left off the 1, making 2,446, the 12,446.

Anyway......150 rounds of .50 delivered to my door for $185.45.  I'm sure it will be a crowd pleaser at the picnic. My wife wants to know what I expect to do with all that many shells???? Well...I just may have to have a talk with Mr. Kingpin about how to best handle that. I said I may need a gun to shoot them with if they don't all get used at the NEOV gathering.

Yep,... someone dropped the #1 somewhere.

I just ran a trial load using a SPEER 647g FMJ with 245.9 grains of Hodgdon 50BMG powder,... the projectile energy comes out to 13075 Joule / 9,643 ft. lbs.

Man 245 grains,... that's 3.5 of my 7mm Mag rounds !
