Saw an interesting book in the bookstore the other day, "The Superiority of Mules".  Talked about how a lot of 'horse' people have sold their horses and replaced them with mules for trail riding, hunting, packing, etc.  Gentler, less inclined to spook, won't hurt themselves, know when to drink/eat, etc.  Any opinions on this?  I'm in Colorado and am leaning toward a horse/mule over an ATV.

Well, your 1st bright thing is leaning toward a horse or mule instead of the ATV. Mules can be all those things and more, but if  you don't have the temperment to deal with one , don't think about them.  They aslo don't come gift wrapped with all those attributes. They are made by good training techniques and a lot of wet saddle blankets and hunting seasons in the mountains .A good mule is hard to find, most have some holes in them that you have to decide if you can live with. (These are usually made by folks who don't know a darn thing about mules, and wnat to treat them like a horse)

A good mule is 10 times better than a good horse. A bad mule is 100 times worse than a bad horse. It's been said that a horse will kill you by accident, a mule will kill you on purpose. They are smart critters, and have a higher sense of self preservation than a horse. They won't " take care of you",  as some profess, but if they get in a bind and you can stay in the middle of them , you are more likely to come out of the situation with everything intact, versus on a horse .

They are no more gentler than a horse, will spook just like a horse. Most are more apt to spin around once and face the danger , rather than just running off, but they do run off. They will hurt themselves, they will founder, although not as likely to, in general are healthier than horses, and live /work longer

If you aren't a equine person with a lot of experience, start with an older horse and work from there.

I have ridden mules for over 30 years, and won't ride a horse unless I have to walk instead. PM me if you want help.

If God wanted you to walk and carry things on your back, He would not have invented stirrups and pack saddles
