for those who have read about my sorry saga of last year's hunts (no buck tags, and a healthy dose of bad luck to go w/ a fist-full of antlerless tags), you might imagine i'm all fired up for this year.

took a short vacation out to the black hills - actually, an advanced scouting trip cleverly disguised as a family vacation, and looked over some familiar areas and checked out a couple of new possibilities. was rewarded w/ seeing plenty of mulies in velvet...none of the whitetails spotted had any antler yet (around here they do now, though).

got rejected for my black hills elk application. what a surprise. expect to draw several buck tags, and am hoping for a favorable antelope draw. time will tell.

also getting the bow tuned up and myself in shape for bowhunting this year. after last years hiatus from bowhunting, i'm really looking forward to this.

anyway, that's the shape of fall for me. no elk tags, should get several deer tags for rifle, one for the bow, and hoping for an antelope.

in most states there is some form of a lottery system. there are still a few states where you can buy a tag over-the-counter, but for the most part the days of walking into the sporting goods store and buying a tag and going hunting are over.

the lottery system varies in how it works from state to state. in s.d., if you apply for a buck tag in a given county for your first choice, and either don't draw, or draw your 2nd choice, you earn a prefernce point. 1 point per year of unsuccessful draws.

the points work by adding your name to the list again. so, if you have 1 point, your name goes in the lottery twice. 2 points, and your name goes thru 3 times. etc etc. no points, your name goes thru 1-time.

the exception (in s.d.) is on the hard-to-draw hunts, like elk, bighorn, mountain goat, and custer state park deer. there, if you have no points, you go thru once. if you have 2 points, 3 times, if you have 3-9 then 4 times, 10-15 is 5 times thru, 15-20 is 6, and then +20 is 7. there are a few people who are in excess of 20 points who still have not drawn an elk hunt. that said, in south dakota the average wait (for elk) is probably around 6 years. helluva lot easier to go to colorado and buy an elk tag otc...

Dakotasin;

I too was, as a child, for a short period of time, was held in durance vile in that area of SoDakia known as Poland.  Or was it Little Russia? To protect my mental health, shakey as it is, I've tried to suppress the memories.  Oh yeah.  Aberdeen.

Ah yes, being used as living bait for the mosquitos on the Mog creek.  Watching my eyeballs freeze, from the inside, at 58 below zero whilst walking to school.  The joy of dentistry after powdering yet another tooth on a Federal #6 shot embedded in a pheasant.  And Russian thistle - no I WON'T go there!

I have to leave now.  900F

Well, at least it's warmer in Samoa, but the women are kinda, umm, large, aren't they?

The problem with the rat race is, even if you win, you are still a rat.

Sluggo;

O ye of little faith.  Why do you presume that I didn't bring my own?

cb- we are currently living about 45 minutes s.w. of aberdeen. were living in mitchell, wanted to head out towards the spearfish area. didn't pan out, and got stuck moving further east and north.

as far as the dentistry-by-pheasant goes, i've been fortunate to not have that happen. we soak the birds in cold water after they've been skinned, and this will show all entrance wounds in a piece of pheasant...
