i've been doing some reading on this, and i discovered something that is rather obvious, but i had never noticed or thought about it:

according to o'connor, the most successful stlks are from up above the game, as in from a higher elevation. in a coulee, on a hill, etc., he contends that game expects the threat to come from BELOW. by negotiating the wind so that you are moving upwind, and then by stalking so that you are coming at the critter from above, you gain a tremendous advantage.

any thoughts on this?

Yup. that's a given. Hunting from a tree stand for instance not only gives you a better view, it puts you above the deers line of sight. I do believe however, before I left Tennessee, the deer were starting to look up. I guess they were being trained by tree stand hunters that couldn't be still.
I've found that to be true out west and here in West Virginia. If you spook a deer or elk, it will almost always flee uphill. :D

Critters like humans, don't look up unless something catches their eye. Thats why tree stands work so well. Just below the ridge top glassing down to a drainage works.
There's a village in Kenya that's looking for their idiot...

Elk are harder to stalk from above than other game.  They do look up.  I prefer to stalk elk from below, especially since glassing them up is more likely from a differnt mountain or from the valley below them.  The ol' timers say hunt deer from above and elk from below.  Oh, sentry cows also make it harder to come in on a bedded herd from above.  Course all that up hill stalkin' requires some trainin' to trim the beer gut an' muscle up the legs.  Some ain't able to compete on those terms.

It's been a lot of years since I was in basketball shape.  Things is about to change...  I heard Anna Kournakova has a new exercise video out.  Guess who's gonna be 'sweatin' to Anna'?!?!  I expect to be a lot lighter on my feet this fall.

Wonder if she'll be wearin' a thong in that video?
