I went out north of town about 10 am today.
I walked out to just past the second windrow a mile, up on top where we shoot heading east.
Then into the coulee about 400 yards and set up where I shot 3 coyotes with my shotgun years ago.
The wind started out bad and got worse as I set. North and sliding east. Right where I wanted to call. But, I was there and was only going to try this one place.
I had the '06 and 45.
The 45 was out and ready and I had my shooting bag. I laid down and called for 37 Minutes with no sign of a coyote. So, I packed up slow and walked back up to the fence. Climbing over the fence I stopped to shift my hands and looked back. YUP, a coyote was coming to where I had been, almost straight downwind from me. I finished getting over the fence as fast as an old short guy can and sat down behind the wooden post. I watched it as I got reset up to try to call it in or just shoot it.
It had not seen me. As I was setting up it ran right through the brush I was sitting in.

There is a small brake that runs right by there and it got in there before I could get on it with the rifle, By then It had to be in my sent or at least from me sitting for 40 minutes. I never saw it again.
RATS...

Dang.

It's interesting that he came in after you quit calling. Does that mean you should have stayed for 40 minutes?

Another great story though.
I have always considered myself to be quite the bullshitter, But ocasionally it is nice to sit back and listen to a true professional......So, Carry on.

Amazing how critters can disappear in a small swale or slight depression between slopes.  lost a few deer that way, even in cut fields.

Well the good news is, you left breeding stock.

I think the breeding stock is already bred.
I have read someplace, the Wisconsin fish and game or something like that, set up cameras and would call and then leave and most places coyotes came in to investigate sometimes hours later...
I did not have that much time.
This time of year hunger is not a driving factor, as with breeding, so it's whenever they get around to it. We try to double the sit time to at least a 1/2 hour. I would think an hour would be better.

Like turkey calling.  I call at day break, sort of let them know there are hens on my ridge.  Sometimes they run or fly in fast.  Often it is 10 am when one sneaks in on me.  Just let them know and they will remember were to wander.

Run and gun isn't legal here.  Calling in with no advance toward turkey is all that is allowed.  But that is my favorite anyway.

I like and open top blind (also illegal here) as i enjoy seeing the song birds and squirrels.  I can't remember a morning turkey hunt that i've not seen whitetails also.
