My 8mm rem mag and the 200 and 220 gr bullets for a 5" kill spot say around 230 yards for zero. That puts it about 2.5" high at 100. and out to 300 and still in the 5" zone. No adjustment needed. It seams to work but I tend to shoot high as a mater of course, so I make sure I'm not fudging when I aim more so when It's 100 or less. On the 6mm and 22/250 It says 197 for the 22 and 220 for the 6 for a 4" zone. that's 1.8" high at 100. BUT that's a miss on a prairie dog at 100. For a 2 inch window it calls for just under an inch at 100 and 187 PBR . I think when I get started on my New bullets for the 22 that's what I will keep it to. The 6 is death at 250 so no change on that after the scope swap. What say you? |

Sounds good. I do that with all my big game rifles.
But you 2.5 high at 100 means you are 3+" high at 150 yards. while the ballistic charts/programs are good starting points; I shoot 100, 150, 200, 300yds to check it out. How high your scope is above the bore really means a lot on getting it right. Some programs assume it is 1.5" but with todays large objective lens it is often close to 2" above bore and that means alot. I wrote computer program for this stuff in 1963. interesting. But laser range finders have really taken over, no guess work now.

Yup!
My two Burris scopes have a 42mm front bell that make me use higher rings. There both 1.75 no the norm 1.5. The calculator I use lets me change the scope height.

I think I will try it on my rifles that don't have a scope that I can easily dial the dope.
The one rifle I have that has a good enough scope to reliably dial is zeroed at 200 yards. I have a drop chart taped to the stock and have checked it to 750 yards shooting 10 inch steel plates. Farther than 750 I didn't hit the plates but I think that is more from my lack of shooting that far more than the scope or rifle. I think I'll try it on y .243 first. Wing master
