That's not including the thumb. Saw a snow owl today. Many of you guys may see them a fair amount more often but in these parts we only glimpse them when winters north of here are bad. Odd. Beautiful creature though so it made for a banner morning to just see it up close. It was just north of the county line of Bedford and Blair, 45-50 up and maybe 30 yards ahead of me. As I rounded the turn passing it, it flew across a field angling away. No mistaking one for any other bird. Notified Gish and Mame and they where happy I did. Apparently the first spotted this year......Yay me!

Yes they are very cool.
I have only seen 2 or 3 and all in the last 10 years. I have only seen 2 Mountain lion, and one Wolverine. Never seen a marten or links. Many wolf , badger, bob cats, Black bear and gobs of grizzly.

I don't think I have ever seen one. Maybe they don't come around this area?
Congratulations JSG. It sounds like a rare event.

I hear it has only been since global warming they have started coming down to the US. It's just the extreme northern parts of MT and across that gets them rarely.

I'm that guy that can pick out every hawk and bird of prey at 70 mph without looking. I also have that uncanny sixth sense that tells me when something is watching me. Weird, I know. In 45 years of spending the majority of my time in the outdoors I've seen two. Both times where in winters heavy in snow and ice north of the I-80 corridor. I report them when I see them. Last time was a few years back when just north of Buffalo got 15 feet of snow. Gish and Fame claim they move quickly south for easier food when the snow gets deep. The part of this story that needs to be taken into consideration is the distance. Last one I saw was a good fifty miles north of here. Placing it as the 3rd lowest in the state to be spotted, yesterdays was the second. Lowest was one that they believe got lost in a heavy squall and made it just outside of Harrisburg...that one got headlines! I report any curiosity in nature. Gives the conservationists something to think about. They claim to have all the answers....still haven't come up with one for some of the oddities I've noticed.

Over the last 47 years I seem to drive from Pittsburgh to Buffalo 3-4 time during the winter. I see snowY owls about every other year. Usually come down this far in late jan or feb.
Since they live in the far north, they have no fear of people or even car/truck traffic. They are always on roadside poles or tall dead trees adjacent I79. I have always figured they are looking for field mice etc. Like all owls they are majestic. Still basically bed bound with my leg, so I haven't seen any owls this year.

Thanks D.
It sounds like your global warming is a lot like ours. It's colder now than it has been since the liberals said we were all going to die off because we were going into another ice age back in the 70's. I hope you are doing better Bear. Wing master
