Got to thinking, with all the present  interest in 6.5 cartridges....is there anyEXTRA value in the 6.5 family?

The 6.5 (anything) shoots a bullet of .264  while the venerable 270 win shoots a .270 bullet. shoots a .277 bullet.  that is just  ,013 difference.

Is that really enough to make a difference?????  in accuracy, long range shooting, or in the flesh?????

Seems like maybe market is talking the 6.5mm cartridges.

If we renamed the 270 win to something like the 6.5+ magnum would people flock to it???

I do realize the small 6.5mm like the Creedmore and the 260 rem fit perfectly into a small/medium  length action.  But people love the Cred in the Tika and savage which come in long action rifles so that doesn't mean much to the buying public.

thoughts!

I have both a 6.5 and 270 and have hunted and killed with both. IMO there is not a lot of difference between them. The advantage of the 270 is a little flatter shooting and the 6.5 advantage is it fits in a short action so can be lighter.  I think a lot of the interest in the 6.5 is the fact that hunters and shooters want something new and exciting, shooting the same old boring 270 or 06 that there dad or grandfather did does not appeal to them. I have went through those same thoughts and I still like new and exciting guns but I also like the old stuff.

Well there is the 270 Weatherby. The 26 Nosler runs circles around it for flatness with the same weight. Same goes for the 6.5 Weatherby. Any of them are capable of better then what was once the norm.
...oh yeah! thats gonna hurt!

As you know I am a big fan of the .270. That being said, I have really taken a liking to my 6.5X55.

I have shot a lot of elk with a .270. I will let you know in a couple weeks how a 6.5X55 does on elk. Hopefully I will get a shot at one.

270 is handicapped by bullet choice, especially high BC hunting bullets and target bullets.

You're exactly right Robert. The almost exclusive 1 in 10 twist rate doesn't help either.

I'm thinking a .270 with 1 in 8 and 170 or 180 grain bullets might be a great gun.

.525 isn't bad at all.

That makes me think about getting the old .270 out and giving them a try.

For hunting my pick would be the 270 WCF.
